This exercise is actually a pretty good example of why a lot of those arguments against impeachment don’t really work b/c they’re based in fear of Trump’s ability to drive up turnout of WWC voters based on an appeal to unbridled racism.
Newsflash: Trump is going to run that campaign anyway. He can’t win any other way and having started to look at the data, I really don’t think he can win that way if the Democratic coalition is united. So what do Dems really have to lose by censuring him here? Or, by impeaching him? Answer: nothing. They have big upside and a lot to gain.
If your opposition to impeachment is that it will be a distraction from a more appealing legislative agenda, the truth is Trump keeps violating the law and making a spectacle of things daily. You can’t ignore the criminal in the room. It’s the classic 800 lb elephant question. He will make this about himself, about racism. If you want to sell prescription drug reform, ACA 2.0 etc., you have to set a position on Trumpism and on the Trump Presidency. Nothing does that like impeachment. It will show that Dems are tough and stand up for their values. Then people will see they offer a much better deal to GOPers.
We get offended at the racism, but those who voted for him just see it as hardball politics (b/c they don’t experience the consequences directly). However, if you punch back, many of those very same people are willing to consider voting for their economic interests if they know Trump can’t deliver. That’s pretty much what happened in 2018.
