Dead on. If there is one thing Trump has mastered it is directing the media to cover certain topics and not cover others. This racist rhetoric he is spewing only helps him appeal to his base. There is nothing he could say at this point to push moderates away from him that haven’t already left, so why not push all in? He gets Epstein on the back burner and has the Trumpers cheering.

Do you really think the Epstein developments are out of the news forever now? That’s going to play out over months at least, and the likelihood of astonishing revelations there is very high. Epstein isn’t going anywhere. And the Occam’s razor view is that Trump does these things mostly because he can’t help it. When he’s criticized he lashes out. That you can point to a scandal he’s supposedly trying to distract from might simply mean he’s always got a lot of scandals going on.

Trump’s rhetorical/political toolkit has two items: braggadocio (in front of friendly audiences) and vitriol/fear (when speaking of his opposition). He rarely uses fact or reason to persuade (and when he does, he distorts or invents) because he understands the primary lesson Stephen Colbert, in his first iteration, had to teach us: “Facts have a liberal bias.” (And, by the same token, he and his administration have yet to learn the primary lesson of good governance: “Good policy is good politics.”)
So, yes: censure and impeach and campaign against him on the facts. He has no defense that can or will refute those facts–and that can’t be a secret or surprise any longer to anyone.
