President Donald Trump signaled in an interview aired Friday that he would seek to block key witnesses from testifying in the Senate’s impeachment trial, including former National Security Adviser John Bolton, former Energy Secretary Rick Perry, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney.
Ah, so this is going to be a charade where Republican Senator vote for witnesses, but Trump then blocks them by claiming “executive privilege”. So the only witnesses we actually get are the Bidens and Schiff. It would be the best of all worlds for them. But I assume CJ Roberts would have to rule on that privilege claim? And if he rules as per the law, he would have to say that claim largely lacks merit.
Ah now we’ll see if Republican Senators (majority male) have become eunuchs or have they had enough?
Really guys you are this willing to cede power to a POTUS, because Trump won’t be POTUS forever, no matter what you wish for.
If I’m not mistaken, it will only take three Republicans to side with the Democrats when asking to subpoena witnesses. If this is true, then the subpoena will come from Chief Justice John Roberts pitting Trump against, not just Congress, but the Supreme Court as well. How will that play out?
If not for the necessity to protect executive privilege for future presidents, Trump would let these witnesses provide testimony that would completely exonerate him. You have to admire that kind of principled selflessness. In fact, I’m sure many people wearing MAGA hats do.
The problem here, of course, is anytime a President is impeached for actions either due to malfeasance or illegality, the people best positioned to know are those serving under the President in the Executive Branch. If he’s allowed to claim this privilege, then there’s almost no point to Impeachment because it becomes practically an impossibility to discover the truth of the matter.
Finding the truth here should be the highest priority, as there’s no Privilege when crimes are involved
Of course he did. The etymology of the word “privilege” comes from the Latin phrase for “private law.” That says a lot about the trouble we are in. Some people get to have private laws that the rest of us are not allowed to.
Does “executive privilege” even exist ss a point of law under an impeachment trial? Nixon and Clinton never got to the trial bit and EP didn’t exist when Andrew Johnson was impeached.
