A lot of things happened. Here are some of the things. This is TPM’s Morning Memo. Sign up for the email version. The Call-And-Cower Response Cycle As we observe the Trump II transition kicking into overdrive, MAGA loyalists are talking big, boasting of their newly acquired power, and spewing threats against all the usual suspects but in…

And so the nightmare begins.

I love free press as much as the next sane person, but must you headline the article with the hideous orange visage? Life is hard enough without having to look at that shit.

Remnick and others keep referring to “liberal democracy.” We know what that means but the MAGA hordes see the word “liberal” and are turned off.

Just call it “democracy,” dammit and stop sounding so high and mighty.

(While they’re at it, expunge the word “existential.” another pseudo-intellectual ball of claptrap.)

I suggest, therefore I am.

We will make them own it. I’m almost hoping they take the House now, which seems likely, because it will be crystal clear what happened and who owns it.

I would say the nightmare continues. We’re in round two. Even though Trump wasn’t in an official office these last 4 years, he still wielded power from MAL.

I don’t understand the mechanics of Trump’s deportation plans. Seems if you remove a person from our soil they have to go somewhere. And they’re not getting there on foot. So what happens if a plane is refused permission to land in Guatemala or Mexico? Or it does land and the passengers aren’t allowed to disembark? Homan is saying the first wave will be criminals. What if the prison in the receiving nation says there’s no more room. And what the hell are you doing sending us murderers and rapists? They weren’t murderers and rapists when they left here.
And is the U.S. foster care system set up to place a million natural born children that the parents might feel are better off staying in the U.S. as opposed to heading to Honduras?

This is what they wanted.
This is what we get.

I don’t know who recommended Timothy Snyder’s ‘On Tyranny’ to me here, but thank you all to those who posted the links.

“Brace for impact”. This phrase is well known to fans of the original Star Trek series. The Enterprise was always bumping into various force fields and blast waves, and Captain Kirk would say this just before the crew were tossed around the bridge. I’m guessing that for psychic protection, many TPM readers are putting unconscious limiters on their estimation of the damage that will be caused by the incoming Trump administration. However, it is going to be far worse than we currently dare to imagine. We are going to witness a seemingly endless stream of horrible developments that we assumed could never happen in America. However, they can and they will. I think all we can do is prepare ourselves, try to avoid shell shock, and prepare for the long fight ahead. The Enterprise survived all those collisions, and so can we.

By 1/20/2029 SCOTUS will be a hardcore 8-1 conservative majority. And all the Federal courts will be similarly oriented. Round two will extend until the middle of the century, and beyond.
Say goodbye to Obergefell, Lawrence and Griswold.

We’ve seen this movie before, all the bravado before the cracks and incompetence surfaces. Just wait for the next natural disaster and see if the Repubs are up to the job, and the excuses they come up with for failing.

I saw the 60 Minutes piece on this, with Thoman and others. It’s worth watching.

Give the guy credit for going on 60 Minutes. It was very clear that he and the ICE head in Baltimore on the show recognize the resource limitations they face.

A possibility that has been floated is that there will be no actual deportation, which is logistically and financially unrealistic. Immigrants (POC) will just be rounded up and placed in detention camps, which will be run by the private prison system. And perhaps those camps can be used for other ‘enemies’. It’s been done before.

ETA: Of course they also make convenient locations for extermination facilities.

Absolutely.

They broke it, they bought it.

Please stop posting photos of Agolf Shitler. I really don’t want to have to see his fat, disgusting, ugly fish- mouth festooned face ever again.

On another note, what are the odds that he doesn’t have dirt on these suck-ups he is appointing to his so- called administration?
