A New York state judge held former President Trump in contempt of court on Monday for defying an order to turn over documents to state attorney general Letitia James for her office’s civil investigation into his business practices.
That’s civil contempt, not criminal contempt. Without getting too far into the legal weeds, civil contempt is for what a party does outside the courtroom, and criminal contempt is for what you do in front of the judge.
Spitting on the courtroom floor is criminal contempt. Spitting on the deposition room floor is civil contempt.
It’s not so much the dollar amount which, billionaire or not, he can easily afford. It’s what it says to the 65-70% of Americans who still believe in the rule of law. That Trump doesn’t think any laws apply to him. That he can say as he pleases and do as he wants without consequences accruing.
As far as I know, this hasn’t happened to Trump before, and sure, he’ll wail loudly about the unfairness of it all. But all he has to do is turn over some documents. One has to wonder, if he’s not guilty, what’s the problem?
Not a large amount for his fans to pay. Because he isn’t paying it from his own money. There are millions of suckers out there that will gladly give Trump the money that their pastors didn’t take, even if that mean for them eating cat food.
Well, she does think she’ll get paid by TMFWWNBN, so that’s evidence in favor of that theory. She also said that he’s law abiding and honest I predict a nomination for the Oscars next year.
Just think about where the 10k per day will come from. The folks still oblivious enough to donate to his MAGA PAC and the RNC who is funding his legal defense. Essentially nothing would come out of his pockets.
True, and the salient point is the finding itself and the fact that he will be identified with it. He can, and very surely will (he’s Trump, after all!), claim that he is being persecuted by some sort of invisible enemies, but the contempt finding is on the public record. That’s more grist for the legal mill that is trying, very publicly, to grind him up.
