If he came to his senses tomorrow, stores would still start to have empty shelves in a few weeks. Fewer than normal cargo ships are leaving China for US ports, and the ones that are leaving are lightly loaded. The ripple-down effects on product ordering and trucking have started to kick in, and that supply chain including 30-40 day cargo ship travel time will take months to recover. The pain will hit consumers very soon and there’s nothing Trump can do about it.
This may or may not be related, but I did our weekly grocery shopping at the local Safeway yesterday. My wife checked the receipts as she always does, to see how much money we saved with coupons. She was surprised to see that items she tagged online for coupons were only showing a few pennies discounted, instead of the normal amount. Maybe a precursor to pulling back on discounts with margins getting tighter for the store, and big price jumps on the horizon?
