Trump Enraged By Michigan’s Mail-In Voting Initiative, Threatens To Hold Up Funding To State | Talking Points Memo

It’s terrifying to think that all that’s necessary to make his batshit crazy and transparently ridiculous accusations effectively true, and his threatened and attempted countermeasures lawful and effective, is enough judges and justices to say that it’s so. A relative handful of far-right judges and justices are all that stands between us and actual fascism, as opposed to Trump’s fascist language and efforts, that have so far MOSTLY not taken root, but could, if these people say they can.

If he declares “Martian Law” and orders the immediate shutdown of say all inner city hospitals, the federalization of local and state cops, the imposition of a 24 curfew, and that anyone with a dark skin complexion seen outside be shot on site merely for being outside, the courts say it’s ok, and the cops comply, there’s no lawful mechanism to stop him or them, and it’s open fascism, the only conceivable remedies being of a Jeffersonian nature, and we all know what that means.

I don’t think that anything quite this radical is likely any time soon, but in theory, it’s possible, and my larger point is that whatever the courts say he can do, he can do, whether or not it’s actually lawful or constitutional. And that’s part of why he’s saying these crazy and terrifying things, not just to vent, beat his chest and intimidate, although that too, but to establish legal “facts” that he hopes will someday be rubber stamped by the courts, which he and his GOP predecessors have stacked with far-right fascists.

This is where it’s all headed, if not now, then eventually. And, given the increasing likelihood of his electoral loss this fall, due to the human and economic effects of the pandemic and his egregious mishandling of it, I see no reason to believe that he won’t go for it, if he feels there’s no other way to stay in office, the only real question being to what extent the courts go along with it. Will they pull that trigger, knowing what it means, and with THIS guy in charge?

Even when he is no longer in office, he will be making claims of power and influence. If they can’t get him his tapioca in the retirement home, he will rail about having the person responsible removed. He will be like that narcissistic spouse that never understands it is over.

That’s not mail in ballots. That’s just mail out ballots.

I’m pretty sure Congress wants to hold onto what power they can and money is their biggie along with actually making laws.

Tis is supposed to be voting by mail-in ballots.
You can’t put your ballot in the mail like a regular letter? Meaning your mailman ought to be able to pick it up at your mailbox like any other letter. Or physically take it to a post office.
If there are restricted drop off points for mail in general that’s not a good thing at all.

WTF is wrong with this asshole? (Rhetorical question.)

Yeah, well, that boneheaded move is sure to win over Michiganders (rolls eyes). Umm…Not even close.

By making life even more onerous than it already is during these stressful times, he’s insuring he’ll lose another percentage point or two by threatening our state…and by using money no less as a condition. Shows you how weak the hand he’s playing really is imo.

Whatever happened to States’ Rights? We voted to allow this and we voted for a new AG. So stay out of our business, pResident Buttinsky.

I can’t help thinking his parents really screwed him up when it comes to money. He’s pathetically obsessed with it as the be-all and end-all for where all his power is derived. Some things are more important than money Donnie, like getting your ass thrown out of office in a fair fight where the voters decide and not by you or your crank rubes, and definitely not Putin.

Obstruction of mail can get a USPS employee five years in prison. Trump would be ordering them to commit a crime, which is itself a crime.

We will look back on today as Trump’s era of restraint. Wait until he demands the slaying of every firstborn son.

Or as someone (the name escapes me at the moment) once said: It’s not illegal if the President does it.
