Trump Enraged By Michigan’s Mail-In Voting Initiative, Threatens To Hold Up Funding To State | Talking Points Memo

This is absolutely unhinged. States control their own elections. Secretaries of State are the elected public officials who administer elections. Their actions cannot be “illegal” unless they are contrary to state law or are gross violations of voting rights.

But you all know that. It’s just another example of Life in Crazy World.

“This was done illegally and without authorization by a rogue Secretary of State,” Trump tweeted. “I will ask to hold up funding to Michigan if they want to go down this Voter Fraud path!”

Why am I laughing? I shouldn’t be laughing.

There is nothing that indicates Benson’s actions were illegal.

Maybe, but I bet she’s not laughing.

She has to be prepared for the storm.

Benson’s office did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Except for the part where Vote By Mail is dependent upon a functioning postal service…which IS a Federal function that the Executive Branch has a great deal of control over.

And Trump is looking to run them into bankruptcy before the election. He is currently holding up the money earmarked for the USPS, which without that and the Congressional loan guarantees, will result in the USPS going bankrupt in September.

Trump is racking up more impeachable offenses at an alarming rate. Unfortunately, that rate is going to accelerate.

Yup. And good luck with this “stand in line to vote for me you old folks, you vote, you get Covid-19” game. Old folks - who Trump won by 7% over Hillary, are not going to die to help out Trump. It is one thing to vote for Trump to stick it to the libs or vent your frustration at American becoming browner and women getting more power, it is another thing to have that cost you your retirement savings and then your life.

Same old folks who elected Trump are going to send him packing.

Maybe Michigan should start the campaign by saying ‘Taking our vote away is as bad as taking your guns away’.

That would escalate real quick.

Article 1, section 9, clause 7 reads…“No money shall be drawn from the Treasury but in consequence of appropriations made by law…”
This means the Legislative branch controls the money, donald, not you. Congress funds your office by the way donald…and they could cut your allowance ya know. Just like when you were a kid and daddy held the lunch money.

Wouldn’t it be nice if our government actually followed the Constitution?

You’re right. It would.

It does, but only the parts they like.

So when does it start???

As @darrtown said above, when will this government actually adhere to the Constitution, and not just the parts they like?

My bold prediction: Not today.

Academic historians of the future will study this moment with wide-eyed disbelief.
Trump’s moronic buffoonery has many markers along the storyline, but this one will be notable.
How many ways can he say “Republicans can’t win when The People vote.”?
The transparency is growing, and the truth is becoming ever more clear to everyone.
Republicans need low turnout and fake democracy to rule as they wish.
High turnout and a healthy democracy is their worst nightmare.

I am not surprised by any of this. Can you imagine 4 more years of this crap. Don’t be fooled it can happen. Maryland does mail in ballot, but they have limited drop off points. Which means not so much participation if you can’t walk or drive to the drop off point. I suppose there will be activists that will collect the envelopes and drop them off in bunches.

Sure…he can throw the fit about California and threaten sanctions. He’s not going to win California anyway. But threatening a swing state? His minders are going to have some ‘splainin’ to do.

And there would be a lot of gun owners very confused in the process. It might toss them into an infinite loop.

may be quite inaccurate, too. But the point is valid.

When I applied to vote by mail in Pennsylvania’s primary, it gave us the option to ask for my future ballots to be mailed to me as well.

I mailed in my primary ballot last week. My 83 year old Republican mother mailed hers this week. She wrote-in Andrew Cuomo’s name as her choice for the Republican nominee for president! She likes his press briefings.

In Oregon there are special ballot boxes right beside the mail boxes in front of post offices, court houses and community centers. No stamp required. And we have about two weeks to drop our ballots into those boxes.

We can drop the ballot into a mailbox or mail it from home and then the USPS will deliver it. Still no stamp required.
