As troubling as it all is, it’s a marvel to watch Trump inform the courts they’re irrelevant and they can all piss off, he’s King, and he’ll do as he damn well pleases. An assertion he is mostly spot-on in making.

Trust really is a thing and this administration engenders none of it at all.

But a substantive, no dancing about collision is coming and tension mainly arises from trying to anticipate what it will look like.

It doesn’t matter what they think of it. Regardless their rulings, they have to be enforced. And if Trump, the DOJ and all other entities empowered to enforce court rulings refuse to do so, what’s next? Say SCOTUS issues an unambiguous, declarative ruling Garcia must be returned. And Trump replies with the equivalent of “Nah, ain’t happening”. For that matter, Trump gives the same response to any ruling? Trump loads a bunch of people on planes that SCOTUS rules cannot leave the country. And off they fly, to El Salvador. Trump tells SCOTUS “Yeah, I defied your ruling, what of it? I’m the Commander-in-Chief. Those military pilots did as ordered. Are you going to cite me for contempt? Fine, see you in court. In the Spring of 2029. Now, leave me alone.”

SCOTUS has no enforcement powers. They depend on compliance. Trump isn’t going to comply. Check and mate.

We need an additional mechanism besides impeachment of the president, which is dependent upon the same political party acting to censure one of their own.
