Over on the side under trending, there’s a thread about how 20 million Fewer Democrats voted this time around. Is anyone else seeing that in the numbers? Is that really true? If so, what the fuck? That can’t possibly be right with all the new voter registrations and such. That just doesn’t add up….

ETA: If we had ‘record turnout’, then how do Dems have 20 million fewer votes than 2020?

If we look at the popular vote numbers, Trump is probably going to get the same number of votes as he did in 2020. He certainly is not going to break Biden’s numbers from 2020. Trump’s current numbers by state are pretty much where they were in 2020 too.

I think that the difference (besides a dose of racism and misogyny) is that in 2020 there was a greater sense of urgency, of personal urgency. Between the pandemic and unemployment, etc, we were not in a good place. People, who don’t normally vote, felt the urgency. They felt the need to get Trump out. This year, thanks to the current administration (whether they want to credit the current administration or not) people are personally doing much better, so those people who don’t normally vote did not feel the same urgency as they did in 2020. Most likely, many of those people figured Harris had it in the bag, so they just didn’t drag their asses to the polls.

So, I’ve been looking for a silver lining. I think I’ve got two…

1. Ukraine: There is now now reason for Biden, in the next 3 months, to not just ship Zelenskyy a massive assload of munitions and more F-16s. There is also no reason, regardless of whether Biden does that, for Zelenskyy to listen to the ‘don’t use our advanced weaponry inside Russia’. Weapons free, Mr. President.
2. We should see some outstanding dystopian S/F coming out of the next couple of years. Like, Bill-Gibson-During-The-Reagan/Bush-Years level stuff.

The statement in the middle of your comment (that I replied to) about Democrats needing to distance themselves from various groups.

Anticipatory obedience is self censoring before you’re even ordered to to “avoid the unpleasantness” and generally going further than what would actually be required. Kind of like Bezos’ refusal to endorse Harris or all the hospitals and doctors that let women die during a miscarriage because treatment might go over the line, or schools purging their bookshelves of any books that might be construed as being pro LGBTQ, etc., etc.

It is fundemental school yard bully psychology. The person doing the bullying has no power or is under threat in the broader life (family, home, classroom), so the bully to feel empowered. But it does nothing to change the real situations in their life. It is a reflection of the bully, not those being bullied.

I think you need to really go after the underlying reasons, to change the behaviour.
