Trump Admin Slaps Sweeping Restrictions On Asylum-Seekers

Maybe this will end the domestic shortage of toothbrushes and toothpaste. I’m tired of the riots at CVS and Walgreens.

Acting DHS Secretary Kevin McAleenan said in his statement that the new rule “will reduce the overwhelming burdens on our domestic system.”

I guess this means we’re clearing the way for another sweeping election-year tax cut.

Asylum is a human right.

I don’t see how he can do this.

He’s trying to adopt the European model, where refugees claim asylum in the first EU country they reach, because everywhere in the EU is considered a safe zone…

For that to happen, there has to be a heart.

I agree. There is a “Safe Third Country” agreement between the US and Canada, but this is pure Executive fiat. He’s trying to overrule US treaty and statutory obligations with the stroke of a pen. This is bullshit. I think it’s patently illegal.

“This Rule is a lawful exercise of authority provided by Congress to restrict eligibility for asylum,”

No it isn’t. The AG has the rule making authority to remove an alien, pursuant to a bilateral or multilateral agreement, to a country (other than the country of the alien’s nationality) in which the alien’s life would not be threatened on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion, and where the alien would have access to a full and fair procedure for determining a claim to asylum or equivalent temporary protection. 8 US Code §1158 Not sure how many safe countries we have agreements with.

Not just Central Americans. We’ve had lots of African refugees show up of late after long journeys through CA and Mexico then long bus rides up from Texas.

Yes which is entirely different. That’s like letting them have asylum in Texas and it’s also good in Iowa.

That’s not what he’s doing.

Maybe a tax cut for the middle class that was scheduled during the break just before the 2018 elections?

Next edict by the Supreme Leader:
Any migrant family whose surname ends in “-ez” shall be denied the opportunity to seek asylum in the U.S.
