Please don’t come at me with: “but it’s panto” or “but in Europe…” or even “Olivier !!!”.

This picture is a marker that could have derailed his first run, but it was a secret at the time.

WTF NYT??? The preznit makes dangerous promises to a foreign leader this past summer and you lead with someone’s stupid party antics from nearly 20 yrs ago.

FYI treason is more important than wokeness.

Sheesh

We have two other left wing parties in Canada - the Greens and the NDP.

They just had a very good morning. Trudeau did not. If past elections are any indication, the left-wing vote will largely consolidate around a single party… and it might not be the Liberals.

Keeping up with Trump is playing whack-a-mole, and everyone knows he’s a childish, moronic, narcissistic incompetent boob. Nothing new to see. But getting a scoop on Justin Trudeau, one of the leaders of what remains of the free world—that sells!

This is Time magazine not the NYT, presumably this story was in the works before WP broke the story about Trump and the whistleblower.

It was the top story in the NYTimes when I opened the online version 1st thing this morning.

Fair enough.

According to CBC, if the election was today, Scheer being up two wouldn’t matter, because Trudeau would still win.

I’m just wondering how this is being seen in British Columbia ?

Whoops. Wrong hunk.

Trudeau’s too dreamy for it to be “blackface”.

Wonder how this plays in Canadian Politics? Does this derail him, force him to resign or will (can?) he get elected again?

He actually apologized, said he was wrong and stupid, which is better than most Politicians do. Other than that, I don’t care, let Canada deal with it.

Lol, thank you for that

I’m sorry but WTF? So now if you are a child and you choose to be an Indian instead of a cowboy and you are REALLY a ‘paleface’ you will never be eligible for politics? Oh YES…let’s dumb down the fools that can run. Let’s screw with ‘play’. Let’s take away ANY acting, or role playing or anything ELSE that might give us an OUNCE of empathy. STAY IN YOUR LANES PEOPLE. Do not cross.

The left consolidating around one party? Maybe you’re talking about helping the Cons gain power with 35% of the in our winner-take-all system. 2011 NDP success will not happen again. Jack Layton’s leadership conquering Quebec was a rare perfect storm.
Anyway, it’s unlikely that this photo will have any major impact in Canada, where everyone who reads ''brownface scandal" goes “huh?”. Which explains why the Cons made sure to leak this to US media to make it blow out of proportion. We know where Trudeau stands on race, multiculturalism, etc. In fact Cons have been relentlessly attacking him for being too welcoming to brown people.

I doubt that he’ll resign.

He already survived one major scandal and it helps him that Scheer has a Ford family member (Ontario’s leader) hanging around his neck like an albatross.

Obviously the one story matters more than the other but it’s a rare publication that doesn’t have room for more than one story. This is the prime minister of a large advanced nation that particularly prides itself on its diversity and tolerant attitude towards immigrants, and I don’t mind saying they sneer at us all the time about their supposed superiority. I knew in the year 2000 that this wasn’t quite the thing. It’s pretty amazing he didn’t. Probably more he figured what the hey, nobody’ll know, it’s just for a larf. It’s not earth-shaking but it’s an instance of privileged insensitivity in a national leader and that’s a story any day.

This is going to be my wife’s first election as an expat (she only recently found out how to get her ballot as a Canadian living abroad). She’s a liberal all the way, but her vote is a throw away… coming from MAGA territory (Alberta in this case). I’m really trying to start paying more attention this election cycle. If shit keeps going sideways down here, our plan B involves moving to Nova Scotia so I can keep tabs on Nathan MacKinnon in the offseason. I keep hoping someone knowledgeable on the subject starts up a Canadian election thread.
