Years ago I had a cartoon of Hitler at a Nuremberg rally and the podium had a smiley face instead of a Swastika. This has always been the fantasy that MAGA/GOP has sold, kinder gentler fascism. I think many people never really thought about the Niemoller poem meaning. Fascism and the tool of demonizing your opponents may start with demonizing language of a despised group, but it cannot end there.

FWIW, the swastika was a symbol for good fortune borrowed from Sanskrit. So not that much different than using a smiley face.
