Sen. Minority Whip John Thune on Thursday criticized Republican activists and party leaders for engaging in “cancel culture” by rushing to censure GOP senators who voted to convict former President Donald Trump of charges that he had incited an insurrection.
Thune had notably sided with Sen. Mitch McConnell, then the majority leader, when in December he suggested that a desperate effort by a handful of House members in his party to challenge the Electoral College’s results reaffirming Joe Biden as the next president would “go down like a shot dog.”
I don’t know who’s going down on him, but that ain’t right.
Thune seems surprised that his party is engaging in rank hypocrisy. Not sure why. I guess he has not been paying attention to what repubs have been doing for the last thirty years or so. Either that or he lives under a rock.
All right, things are getting muddled here. First “cancel culture” as a GOP bugaboo meant “liberals criticizing awful people and that criticism having an effect.” Now it’s also “conservatives criticizing conservatives for criticizing awful people.” And this is what they always do. They start calling everything the bugaboo’s name. You can’t take some already vague term and vague it up even more until it’s meaningless and someone says “You missed a spot there” and you say they’re cancel-culturing you. Sorry to be the language police but somebody has to be or society will devolve into chaos and madness.
‘This unprecedented effort is not about Democrats opposing political violence,”
It’s NOT?? Heck, I thought that’s what the impeachment was all about. That, and Trump’s refusal to accept the people/states’ vote and peaceful transfer of power. I guess all these were just hunky-dory with Thune? Smash and trash the Capitol, kidnap and string up the members of Congress and VP? Kill the police who try to get in their way? Thune likes this?
And I thought he maintained that Antifa was doing it. Not even his own people!
Sadly, too late. We’ve already lost political correctness, tascism, socialism, The Green New Deal (apparently it hasn’t even been voted for, much less implemented, but has somehow destroyed Texas). “Cancel culture” always s**ed, anyway. I don’t mind letting it become just a meaningless epithet.
It never meant anything more than longtime abusers losing their jobs because people came forward. I think as a name it’s kind of clunky, and as a thing it’s at least a bit complicated. Maybe the culture of complicity that enabled the abuse to go on is what needs a name.
And people wonder why Qanon went so far with these guys. They act like high school kids waiting in lust for the next fad to go along with. Cancel Culture. A Tucker Carlson fabrication to discredit not liking GOP’er assholes. If you don’t…well that’s cancel culture and that’s bad. Has to be bad…“they told me so”…
