This Russian Dissident Won Political Asylum. ICE Refuses To Release Him.

Two months ago, 25-year-old Ilia Chernov beat long odds and convinced an immigration judge to grant him political asylum in the U.S.  Normally, that finding would have been enough for Chernov to obtain legal status and live freely in the U.S. Chernov’s judge told him that he would soon be released. But Immigration and Customs…

Obviously Trump was told to detain this man by Putin and Trump always does what he is told by his owner.

Not a land of laws, merely guidelines to be ignored when convenient.

Why did he pick the US as the country to ask for asylum in?That’s like going from the fire to the frying pan.

Sending this guy back to Russia is probably worth a couple of the permits necessary for building Trump Tower Moscow.

Well duh. trump doesn’t want to anger his alpha male avatar, Putin.

Well, but he didn’t come to Trump’s United States, aka Murderous Putin’s Biggest Ass Kissers of America. Instead, he came in early 2024 – and applied to come before that – back when the United States was still behaving in what used to be its normal attitude toward right-wing Russian dictators. He couldn’t have realized that Trump would return and what would happen under his regime.

What I find shocking is just how many American civil servants are willing to do Trump’s obviously illegal bidding. Not just high officials but folks all the way down the chain of command. People who know the law and what they are doing is wrong.

Lots of those underlings have joined/been selected precisely because of their leanings.

@marciaann Oops, thanks for the correction.

These days it feels like it’s always been Felonville.

Yeah, I know exactly how you feel! … I was wondering what the deal was with him, too. Surely as a Navalny supporter you wouldn’t want to involve yourself with Trump’s gangs of thugs … But then I found the dates – and the poor guy got schnookered with the same hope that was held by the Dems last year…

The problem is it hasn’t always been Felonville. Not to long ago the civil service could be counted on to be loyal to the people, the country, the department and elected officials in that order. Now they all seem willing to do whatever the moron in charge says the country be damned.

There is a military parade coming up soon. If there are protests will the Army drive tanks over the protesters? After the last few months my guess is hell yes.

MAGA love saying the libs hate America.

I’m a lib.
I don’t hate America.

But this shit right here makes me ashamed of America.

ICE and the border patrols have (reportedly) been both corrupt and evil for a long time now. For the same reasons you tend to get sadistic prison guards.

Why does the whole article use he/him pronouns when they identify as non-binary? I know some NB’s prefer male or female pronouns but most use they/them.

Arbitrarily punishing the innocent is one of those areas where the MAGA folks have really sought to make the US a world leader.

“Which asylum-seekers ICE detains at entry remains a mystery.”

In this case, maybe not so mysterious: “Chernov identifies as non-binary.”

A bullseye on his back for thug-MAGAs I’m afraid.

From the Guardian…

What’s more, considering that Trump once tweeted: “He who saves his Country does not violate any Law,” he needs to stop acting like a modern-day king or Napoleon who is above the law.
… … … …
How about impeaching him for the 185 legal infractions mentioned in the article?

Hello,

Thank you for asking: Chernov prefers he/him.

Law enforcement in general is filled with authoritarian assholes. ICE and BP in particular are filled with authoritarian assholes who want to crack the heads of their societal inferiors.

Do you have any sense of what the next step would be? Can his lawyers appeal for his release, with the original judge or another judicial track?

That was the prevailing question in my head after reading the article - What can he or his lawyers do now, in a legal sense?
