ThinkProgress Shuts Down | Talking Points Memo

Progressive news organization ThinkProgress is shutting down.

The news outlet, which was an editorially independent project of the liberal think tank Center For American Progress, will cease operations Friday and be folded into the think tank’s overall online efforts, according to a CAP statement Friday. The Daily Beast first reported the development.

They lost their advertising dollars, IIRC, when their website was tagged by Google, and had been asking for donations for over two years. If progressives weren’t supporting them, they just weren’t going to survive.

That’s a shame. I frequent only a few liberal sites and have enjoyed more than a few articles from Think progress over the years.

There was a 2015 article in the Intercept that CAP pressured ThinkProgress writers to not criticize Israel. That’s when I started to not pay attention to them.

This makes me incredibly sad. Such a good bunch of writers, reporters, and investigators. Good damn reporting there. Really, Dems? No one could find a liberal billionaire to help keep it going? What a fucking shame.

That sucks. ThinkProgress was one of the three websites I read all day and the one I use most for policy news, as opposed to the political gossip stuff TPM posts or the ridiculous amount of news-analysis Steve Benen writes on Maddow’s blog.

Now I feel kinda bad that I never became a member, but I didn’t have the personal connection I do with TPM so I didn’t bother even after they explained how desperate they were. (And yes, I’m secretly a member here under a fake name. I just don’t like to brag about it.)

I like the way Judd will only utilize odd numbered bullet points.

From the Intercept article referenced above:

Since that article, CAP, to its credit, has provided some greater transparency about its funding sources. As the Washington Post ’s Sargent reported earlier this year, “CAP’s top donors include Walmart and Citigroup,” and also “include the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, which represents leading biotech and bio-pharma firms, and Blue Cross Blue Shield Association.” Other large CAP donors include Goldman Sachs, the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates, Bank of America, Google and Time Warner.

Are you saying you have a second, paid account in addition to this one?

Why?

Josh Marshall has written some interesting and informative columns here about the challenges involved in digital publishing and the reliance many have had on companies such as Facebook and Google.

He said this was one reason he has worked to cultivate a base of subscribers.

Maybe he has some insights on what ultimately doomed ThinkProgress.

I’ve enjoyed reading their stories for many years and am also sad to see them go.

Maybe it’s a medical thing.

Yes, truly a bastion of utter depravity and evil. We’re much better off for it’s closure.

On unpopular threads he can argue with himself.

Ty for that reference

The emails, provided to The Intercept by a source authorized to receive them, are particularly illuminating about the actions of Tanden (right), a stalwart Clinton loyalist as well as a former Obama White House official.

I’m a bigly fan of whistle-blowers (even those who give info to the Intercept) and I think they’re brave folks.

That said, I think that it’s odd that Greenwald concentrated on these emails (weird, eh?), but hasn’t said anything about similar comments from the current president.

Both sides are alike, right?

Reality Winner was a whistle blower and brought a scoop to The Intercept.

Anyone know when she’s supposed to be released?

The problem of all journalism is one of business models.

What amazes me is that this site has found a solution that no one has copied. Yeah, it’s hard work, but TPM began as a blog 19 years ago and can now afford a unionized workforce.

So maybe the story here isn’t that ThinkProgress had to fold, but that TPM is still around.

Don’t be modest, Josh. Take a bow.

Kate Riga has to sell Amway on the side to make ends meet. There’s that.*

*Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
