It is important to remember that rioters who invaded the capitol included people who could afford to fly in from Hawaii, held positions in state government, or could afford decent AirBnBs. Peter Turchin prefers talking about these middle-rank Trumpsters as a counter-elite. Garbage people, sure, but many have good jobs or pensions, including military pensions.
I think before what happened in the US capital many mostly Republicans thought they were somehow isolated and or protected from this. Hopefully now they are awake to the fact that it’s real and needs to be shut down asap.
