The Years Of Vitriolic Misogyny At The Heart Of The Paul Pelosi Attack

The appropriate figure of speech I was looking for as I read this story is metonymy, where one person represents things closely associated with the person referred. It’s acceptable to spit as you say, “Nancy Pelosi” or “Hillary. Clinton,” but it’s not OK to openly hate the things that both women have bravely stood for, such as women’s reproductive rights, children’s programs, and economic equality measures. “Nancy Pelosi,” said with a furious frown and scowl on one’s face, has been the rhetorical refuge of misogynists, racists, wing nuts, and haters for a long time. Whoever has the most potential. I’m guessing Katie Porter as she gets more national attention. And her figure makes her ripe for the kinds of things that Republican evolutionary throwbacks just love to say.

No mention of the hate and vitriol Hillary Clinton has dealt with for the past 30+ years? Or how Michele Obama was treated?

Let’s also not forget Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer. Talk about misogyny - the far right literally tried to assasinate her.

She’s reached a zenith already, I think – though if she should ever run for president and become a national threat to the Right, they could ramp up even higher. And no doubt would.

I’ve been wondering if the magnetometer she had removed is still gone.

The women on the right are doing perfectly fine because they’re helping to perpetuate hatred for the women on the left. Excellent article @kateriga, but highly depressing at the same time.

Best guess is one of the possible woman presidential candidates, such as Amy Klobuchar. The knives were out last cycle on how she mistreats her staff. We can be sure to hear more about Stacy Abrams’ sudden wealth (hmmmm!). or Gretchen Whitmer’s instability when face with kidnapping. And so it goes. (I know I am missing a few, but I am not missing Sinema–trying to forget her.)

Once I entered nursing in the 80s, the majority of people I worked with as my peers were women and most of my immediate bosses were also women. No complaints here. I never felt passed over or unfairly treated because I was a man, but I saw a lot of what I considered at least borderline misogyny being practiced by women against other women. FOX news has spent years picking out the people they thought might become leaders in the Democratic party and then defaming them them day and night in an almost Pavlovian attempt at conditioning their viewers to snarl and growl at even the mention of a name like Hillary, Nancy or Obama. But they do save their most disgusting vitriol for women, and the most skilled practitioners of the conditioning are the women of FOX. After all, if a WOMAN criticizes another woman, it must mean something, right? This is a direct corollary to if a black person criticizes another black person, it must be true.

ETA: Has anyone seen @pluckyinky around? Is she OK? Haven’t seen anything witten by her in a while but I have not been reading every comment either.

I had no idea that ants were so religious.

If the balloon had anti-black history messages stenciled on it, or if it were dropping anti-trans pamphlets down to earth, or if it were broadcasting denunciations of wokeness non-stop, MAGA would be pro-balloon. They’d be welcoming the balloon. They’d be worshipping the balloon.

A stark difference is that though I’m sure women on the right get threats, I wonder if the volume of threats is even close to the amount of threats dem pols get.

MTG has complained that someone tried and convicted of threatening her is under house arrest while awaiting sentencing. How many people lobbing death threats from the right even get charged?

This is a brilliant editorial column. Kate Riga is a rare talent and TPM is lucky to have her.

They’d be finding verses in the bible documenting the balloon, maybe Ezekiel?

You forgot her gender which is the big one.

She didn’t have it removed, not exactly. It’s gone because it was authorized by Speaker Pelosi in the previous Congress. That authorization expired with the incoming Congress, which failed to renew it because the R majority likes their performance politics.

Also, when it was active it was only on the private entrance for Congress members and staff. The public entrance still has metal detectors. There is a standing rule (that hasn’t been rescinded as far as I know) that members of Congress can’t carry weapons onto the House floor. Which some are probably breaking.

She should probably resign from her committees then. Work/life balance is important.
