Perry has nothing to worry about if he was on the up and up and dealt in good faith.

Republicans seems to be starting off on a bad foot and the other is in latrine hole. I predict we will see more of the first because of the second.

Honestly, the next two years are going to be bad. But they won’t be anything like the span between 1/20/17 and 1/20/21, which were absolutely horrendous, espectially since the former administration’s malfeasance and direlictions of duty resulted in the deaths of millions of Americans.

Pinned down by Ari Melber on his reported request for a pardon in the waning days of the Trump presidency, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) mustered a feeble: “Cassidy Hutchinson is a known liar.”

Yeah, that’s the ticket, Matty. Good luck with that.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) mustered a feeble: “Cassidy Hutchinson is a known liar.”

Can Hutchinson sue him for defamation? He wasn’t on the House floor and she’s a private citizen.

A question is, why is Hakeem Jeffries siding with Kevin McCarthy?

One person familiar with the situation said the Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group – made up of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and others in leadership – voted unanimously to intervene. It was an effort to unseal the docket in Perry’s case, the person said, a move that’s viewed to be in the chamber’s best interest in order to preserve the Constitution’s Speech or Debate Clause, which protects the work of members of Congress.

“It was a unanimous vote, in terms of the bipartisan legal group, related to the institution of the House of Representatives,” Jeffries told reporters Monday.

‘Bloody his nose’: Conservative begs prospective Trump rivals to get aggressive - Raw Story - Celebrating 18 Years of Independent Journalism

Lewis believes that DeSantis’s best path to attack Trump is, paradoxically, in one of his administration’s biggest achievements: The funding for rapid development of vaccines against the novel coronavirus.

In a rational world, Operation Warp Speed would be something worth bragging about," he argues. "But the Republican primary electorate isn’t a rational world. As such, greenlighting the COVID-19 vaccine is potentially a serious vulnerability for Trump in a Republican primary. Meanwhile, DeSantis—who wants to empanel a grand jury to look into COVID-19 wrongdoing—is positioned to lodge such an attack. But will he?"

I was waiting for the Memphis plot twist. Found it!

The Memphis Police Department has been accused of “shielding” the only known white officer involved in Tyre Nichols’ arrest, as it was revealed two more officers were placed on leave in connection with the man’s death at the hands of police.

Lawyers for the Nichols family denounced the Memphis police for allegedly giving special treatment to a white official by placing him on leave despite his involvement.

The sixth officer, identified as Preston Hemphill, who is white, was suspended with pay pending a hearing […].

The current legal fight remains secret because it is an outgrowth of grand jury proceedings, which are themselves secret.

Can’t tell. Will the appeals court proceedings (hearing on Feb 23 and related filings) be secret or public?

Suppose I understand Jeffries supporting the House filing on the basis of protecting the institution, but really hope it goes nowhere. The Appeals court panel is not encouraging.

New drop at Emptywheel.net:

She suspects the reason “Merrick Garland appointed a Special Counsel was because the Republican US House majority made it more difficult to investigate those members of Congress, starting with Perry, who participated in Trump’s coup attempt. But Jack Smith’s background in investigating former members of Congress sure will help this investigation.”
