It’s impossible to predict how many votes a conviction would peel away from Trump. On the one hand, I don’t believe for a second that all the R’s who say in polls that they won’t vote for him if he’s convicted will stay home. Or vote for someone else. When the rubber hits the road on election day, the “anyone but a Democrat” dynamic will kick in for most of them. They’ll be voting against Biden, not for Trump.
On the other hand, I do think it’s reasonable to assume he’d lose at least some votes if he was convicted. Maybe not many, but every lost vote would matter when he’ll need to improve his performance in 2020 to win.
