But for the judicial malice of John Roberts and Aileen Cannon, trump would have been tried and convicted in both cases months and months ago. And it still would not have made a difference, because his voters either do not care or, at least as often, like it that he’s a rules-breaker.
In retrospect, trump’s decision to announce his candidacy right after the 2022 midterms was at least partially aimed at goading Joe Biden into running again. If so, it worked. And that decision prevented Kamala or anyone else who emerged from the primaries from defining themselves as the change candidate. And now we have the luckiest man who ever lived back in the Oval Office as the most deeply unfit person to ever hold it.
He’s a conman with a lifetime devoted to working the system. What he has this time is a Supreme Court decision that says he cannot be prosecuted for anything he does while in office.
What exactly might it mean for a state to have its federal funding slashed? Only federal funding that flows through the state government? Doesn’t some funding come to municipalities directly from the federal government? Might federal funding that goes to students and for research be included? How would any of this be accomplished? And to the extent that a state felt economic hardship as a result of slashed funding, wouldn’t that reduce the federal taxes collected from that state?
The Ship of State, once thought to be unsinkable, now lists perilously, taking on water. Hopefully the descent will be slow, but the iceberg was struck in 2016.
His corrupt SCOTUS justices and Aileen Cannon let him walk. He would have been tried and possibly convicted (*) before the election with a different SCOTUS and judge. The DOJ did its job.
(*) A jury might have still have acquitted him at trial because juries can be fickle. There is no way to make a firm prediction of what might have happened and who is to blame, without taking that into account. We’ll never know for sure.
Whenever I see a Trump sign juxtaposed with a Blue Lives.(What exactly is a blue life?) or a Back the Blue sign I cringe. Now I want to just hurl.
TFG also received the endorsement from national law enforcement groups and unions. What kind of credibility do they now have? If at all.
Oh yeah, they’re gonna slash funding to states that give them the most money? I’m thinking of California, where I live. Most blue states give more to the government than they take in. So you’re gonna cripple that funding mechanism?
Wow, these people are fucking geniuses.
Krugman quotes a US law, but aren’t trade agreements subject to international law, which Trump has not yet found a way to control? World Trade Organization (WTO) has no enforcement powers, but is there another mechanism?
How will that actually work? The mechanisms for taxation and for distribution of tax money are very different. Merely reducing monies going to a state in no way changes the mechanism for extracting it.
