Eastern Oregon has some of the most picturesque natural beauty of the state. We go there often to get away, but then I like open spaces and desolated landscapes ![]()
Seattle metro area (4 million) is double that Portland (2 million). Portland metro area is actually more like 2.5 million but 0.5 million of that is across the Columbia river in Vancouver WA and the WA-3rd represented by GOP Jaime Herrera Beutler is actually at least 2/3 suburban Portland.
Washington also has actual cities in the eastern 1/2 of the state with Spokane and the Tri-Cities whereas Oregon has nothing but desert and tiny ranch towns in the eastern 1/2 of the state. Mostly because there is no water.
Thanks - I was confused when I reviewed the flagged content - I say worse things than that about my own family.
I get that the population of the Seattle Metro area is 4 million. It is just a surprise to me that the Portland area is not closer in size to my city. Jaimie Herrera Beutler’s district also extends into Thurston Co. where my daughter lives but excludes Olympia and includes Vancouver but also a swath of S.Eastern WA along the Columbia. Much of her District is rural -outside of Vancouver.
Yeah, it’s possible. I live in Portland, not in Walden’s district, but central/eastern Oregon is going to be a tough sell for a Dem, even for a Dem like Schrader in the 5th.
Clark County which is suburban Vancouver contains about 500,000 people and that is about 3/4 of the WA-3rd by population. The rest is just smaller towns along I-5 up to Centralia and Grays Harbor. The only part of the district that is growing is Clark County which is suburban Portland. Vancouver is actually the 4rd largest city in Washington and closing in on both Tacoma and Spokane.
Portland is nowhere near the size of Seattle. It doesn’t have any major universities or major industrial base like Seattle with all ports and Boeing. I’ve lived in both cities much of my life. Portland is a regional city. Seattle is an international city. Big difference.
It’s just like the passel of Texans who are retiring. It’s no fun making a long commute to D.C. to simply hear when they get there “the (Democratic) ayes have it.” Now he can stay put and work on his delusional thinking of future R House victories.
Nothing like a good bit of radiation to ensure that it stays that way for the next few millenia…
I have also lived in Seattle (born here) nearly my entire life and have made many trips to Eastern WA. And I do cough a bit when you state Seattle is an International city but you correct saying so. Amazon, Boeing, Microsoft and other tech industries have contributed much to the growth. There are large areas of rural farmland/vineyards/orchards but Spokane and Tricities (Pasco, Richland,Kennewick) are substantial population centers. Wenatchee and Chelan are growing as well.
Reminds me of an old Tom Lehrer tune–
Along the trail you’ll find me lopin’
Where the spaces are wide open,
In the land of the old AEC (yea-hah!)
Where the scenery’s attractive,
And the air is radioactive,
Oh, the wild west is where I wanna be.
Good Riddance.
“Walden, whose district office incorporates the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, said, although one militant was killed and another wounded in the armed occupation of the refuge, “We can all be grateful that today has ended peacefully, and that this situation is finally over. Now, life in Harney County can begin to return to normal and the community can begin the long process of healing.” Walden complained about allegedly poor federal forest and land management policies during the occupation, and said he would like to see changes to those policies: “We need to foster a more cooperative spirit between the federal agencies and the people who call areas like Harney County home.”[22] On June 27, 2018, on the floor of the House of Representatives, Walden pleaded for a pardon for Dwight and Steven Hammond, who repeatedly committed arsons and threatened federal refuge workers, over an 18-year period, saying that the original trial’s federal Judge Michael Robert Hogan said that the mandatory sentence would, “…shock the conscious (sic).” On July 10, Trump pardoned both men, commuting their sentences to time served.[23] Stephen had been scheduled to be released on June 29, 2019 and Dwight on February 13, 2020.[24]”

That’s why it Sucks in Seattle.
I’m from North Dakota. Oregon has NOTHING on ND when it comes to open spaces.
Thanks for posting this.
I’m “optimistic” every time I buy a lottery ticket. Do I think I’m going to win? No.
Yeah, sometimes around here “Mommy, that person has a big nose” gets you sent to your room.
I visited Valley City one winter weekend in the early 80s.
That was the longest month of my life.
The landscape looked like the moon, but with snow and unceasing wind.
I lived there for 23 years.
23 gut-wrenching years.
It seemed longer.
Yup. It reminds me of my high school newspaper.
I have an acquaintance I do business with that has done extremely well for himself. Has more money than he or his kids could reasonably spend before dying.
Anyway, his wife buys gas the other day. Decides to pay inside instead of at the pump because she wants a soda. Buys a scratch off lottery ticket on a lark. Wins $50,000.
Life ain’t fair.
