The Coup That Almost Succeeded - TPM – Talking Points Memo

The testimony of Cassidy Hutchison moved us decisively beyond questions of incitement and dereliction of duty by President Trump.

Unnamed Source Tries To Undermine Cassidy Hitchinson’s Testimony | Crooks and Liars

Every one of these tweets/threads—and we've gotten them from ABC, NBC and CBS reporters now—is based on a single unnamed source. And every time the unnnamed source insists on the bizarre attribution "a source close to" the Secret Service, like the person isn't employed there. https://t.co/HUMF64KZtm

I watched the hearing yesterday and followed along here but watching the 3 minute summary on ABC news last night floored me. It was surreal.

Imagine Trump announces a sudden rally, and dozens of airports are inundated with flyers wanting to rush to the host city. And Trump hears they’re having trouble getting on their planes fast enough to fill the arena in time for the cameras. So he orders the TSA to disable their metal detectors and let passengers on their planes, armed or not, time is of the essence.

He’s not President so that’ll never happen.

The author of a book on the Secret Service that covers the Trump years, Leonnig told Rachel Maddow that the pair “were very, very close to President Trump.”

“And some people accused them of at times being enablers and ‘yes men’ of the president—particularly Tony Ornato—and very much people who wanted to do what he wanted and see him pleased,” Leonnig said. “And that was frustrating to agents who were more focused on, say, security, or being independent, or good planning. So, both of these individuals lose a little credibility because of how closely they have been seen as aligned to Donald Trump.”

Leonnig then described the general political bent of the Secret Service during this time.

“There was a very large contingent of Donald Trump’s detail who were personally cheering for [Joe] Biden to fail. And some of them even took to their personal media accounts to cheer on the insurrection and the individuals riding up to the Capitol as patriots. That is problematic,” Leonnig said.

Very disappointed to read the AP account this morning in my local paper. 12 and 13 paragraphs in before there is any discussion of the armed people Trump wanted to welcome into his rally. Zero mention of Trump’s disregard for Pence’s safety, zero mention of Roger Stone or Mike Flynn, or of Mark Meadows wanting to go to the Willard. Zero discussion of Trump’s extreme reluctance to do anything to stop the attack on the Capitol, zero mention of the possibility of obstruction of Congress through witness tampering or intimidation.

So yes, David Kurtz, I saw what you saw. And other professional journalists and their editors did not.

Sociopaths have a conscience, albeit a weak one, and will often justify something they know to be wrong. By contrast, psychopaths will believe that their actions are justified and feel no remorse for any harm done.

Last night was when observers moved Trump from the sociopath to the psychopath category.
