A lot of things happened. Here are some of the things. This is TPM’s Morning Memo.
The appointment of Robert Hur as special counsel to investigate the Biden classified documents matter is another example of the extreme imbalance between Democrats and Republicans in the politics of national security and law enforcement.
This whole thing is becoming disquieting. Maybe there is a point here as to the Dems not having the legal bench that demands we appoint Republicans. I don’t know what to think anymore, but if what is stated in the first segment is true, the Dems have ceded a lot of ground.
For the stupid comment
Arguably there’s no big uptick in “extreme weather” here, there’s just SOOOO many more ground targets now than there were even 20 years ago, due to population and industrial growth.
Rush Limbaugh perfected the art of working the refs to get conservatives favorable treatment. They now all understand that all they need to do is scream at high volume and in large numbers to move media and government in their favor, because who wants to be screamed at by thousands of people all day long? At this point many are simply conditioned to do what they want so the screaming doesn’t even start.
Whatever that’s supposed to mean, anyway… No bias, maybe? And how does one prove or demonstrate that, especially in as volatile a situation as this.
It’s almost like the Dems are in this dysfunctional relationship where they are trying to please a partner that can never be pleased. The more we concede, the more they demand until finally the Dems have nothing.
Some investigators on Mr. Smith’s team believe that any initial charging decisions, expected as early as this summer , will involve the investigation into whether Mr. Trump illegally kept classified materials at his Florida estate and obstructed repeated efforts to retrieve them.
Another six months to figure out that TFG did that? So yeah, nothing is going to happen.
Just more proof that Democrats believe in the sanctity of law more than the Republicans, the saving grace in all this, though not reflected in the makeup of the government is more Americans vote for Democratic than Republican.
I think if anything, this special council appointment illustrates a stark difference between Biden and Trump.
It’s not the best situation but it is definitely not the worst.
More double standards: initially, as I thought about the appointment of a special counsel, I thought, ‘well, this will blunt republican charges of a coverup.’ Strategically, this is probably still true; Republicans will make those charges, but the results of a special counsel investigation will give the Biden administration an opportunity to talk about transparency and accountability.
And yet, trump was given numerous opportunities to return the documents he held. Had trump done so, no special counsel would have been appointed. Biden’s team volunteered that they had materials, willingly returned them, did multiple searches to look for any remaining materials, and yet . . .
But those arguments are a product of the same structural imbalance that leads to Democrats having to bend over backwards so far to demonstrate impartiality and fairness that they appoint Republicans.
This is just an exclamation point to all the arguments about representation.
Here Democrats are ceding the argument that any Democrat – even white male ones – are a priori unqualified to act in the public interest. It is “just easier” to nominate Republicans; in the same way for decades it has been easier to give the job to the white male. So, when the author notes the terrible and lasting effects – no bench to draw from; people losing opportunities – applying to Democrats in general, please let’s contemplate that this is what systemic bigotry has done to POC and women for so so long.
It is just an interesting example of bringing the issue home to a possibly different audience.
