Truth be told, the grand total wouldn’t amount to grocery money.
OT: And speaking of groceries–not that anybody was–do any of you use local online pickup for groceries? We do, though my wife’s last pickup was…peculiar. That is to say peculiar in a sort of what the fuck kind of way. They doubled our order, tripled it on bread. We know have 18 bags of bagels(!) (6 ordered), 8 bags of hoagie buns (3 ordered), and 9 other bags of various breads (3 ordered). We’d normally freeze some, but…18 figgin’ bags of bagels? They only charged is for a single order.
I’ve heard him use the phrase “wash through,” which medical people use in the sense that a tidal wave washes through uncontrollably. He even mentioned they didn’t like him talking about it, but obviously it appeals to him because other people pay a huge price and he gets a reward, the way he envisions it. I’ve also heard the phrase “take the punch,” although I haven’t heard it from him. These people go out of their way to talk in a jocose and offhand way about mass death and suffering, like Buck Turgidson in “Strangelove” acknowledging that in a nuclear war we’d “get our hair mussed” with millions of deaths. They’re a special kind of tough guy: they can imagine with perfect calmness the pain of people unlike themselves.
I’m in the UK right now, and I cannot say so. Without contact tracing, and I have no word of any so far, then this is just de facto herd immunity. Out of incompetence in the US, out of lack of money here.
on paper it looks just fine to them… in fact, there is probably a scenario assessment in their files that evaluates optimal % of lives lost .
…3% vs 5% vs 7.5% vs 10% … and how to get there
If that’s what he wants, he’s unlikely to get it this way. People without money don’t buy stuff, nor do they pay taxes. Dead people don’t work in the business establishments where the people with no money to spend are not spending their money.
Abbott had always paid attention to his own doctors because his very life depends on it and that is why his moves now are craven and mendacious. He is not a fool he is intelligent and he knows better.
As for Republicans caring about the born they fully believe in abortion, in the 4th trimester.
There is nothing going on in the UK. They can’t afford PPE, and won’t borrow for it. They are humping the dog here harder than in the US.
The UK never recovered from the recession, it’s plain everywhere you go outside of London. Recession plus Brexit plus Covid-19 plus sudden requirement of hard cash = UK kind of just letting it happen. They’re wiser to avoid the 2nd wave, and stay shut down, so they will fair better than the US in the end, but the population is more pliable.
Neither the US nor the UK can be counted on for accurate reporting, of course. The horrible truth is out there, in trailers, somewhere.
I was going to do curbside pick up. Signed up and everything. Went to make my list and the things I buy were not on the list to order. So I went to the store, there were the things I wanted (except for TP, but that’s another story), so I was able to get what I wanted.
Later on on a community board several people complained that they did online ordering for delivery. And it took a week and half to 2 weeks for the stuff to arrive. Then since I kept going to grocery store I noticed that the “pickers” of items were constantly on their phones talking to customers to figure out what would acceptable as a replacement.
I feel lucky that there are 4 grocery stores on the main artery through my area. I will start at the one farthest from me and make as many stops at those 4 as I need to to get what I need. Except for TP it worked fine.
