Texas Republicans are spinning their Democratic colleagues’ walkout as an abdication of duty, with the lieutenant governor in particular vowing that there will be a vote on the voter restrictions Democrats are trying to block.
Can we get some context on the claim that the Ds risk arrest for violating the Texas Constitution. Normally people don’t get arrested for violating state constitutions unless there are statutes criminalizing the conduct ruled out by the constitution. Are there such statutes about this sort of thing in Texas? If not how would it work if they were to be arrested?
The same situation applies in a number of states. The state constitution permits them to be compelled to appear. In this case, they can be arrested and brought to appear - if they are within the state of Texas.
Damn. The pilot of that plane should lose their license. It is generally illegal to fly below 100 ft. and that guy is almost on the ground in a residential area with trees, f’christsake!
“It’s my hope that Senate Dems report tomorrow to do what they were elected to do. We will vote on SB 1.”
I wonder how Mr. Patrick feels about McConnell and 49 other GOP senators using the filibuster to avoid even debating, much less voting on, Senate bills. You know, the things they were elected to do.
These Dems are not running away, they have all gone to Washington. DC “to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” as is their guaranteed right under the First Amendment. The Texas GQP Legislators are probably too stupid to remember this. They are alsol too stupid to realize what they are trying to do violates several other Amendments, like the 13th, 14th, and 15th.
