There is a very good point made in Ken Burns/Lynn Novick’s Prohibition documentary, in addition to some other interesting parallels to the gun issue.
The “Drys” were extremely strident after the 18th amendment was passed and refused to go along with any changes to the laws, in spite of pretty overwhelming popular support to do so. Their failure to bend in the slightest was one of the major factors in making the 21st amendment possible.
Also worth mentioning it (21st) passed like grease through a goose. We get enough people to say “enough”, and we can change this.
