Tennessee state Reps. Justin Pearson of Memphis and Justin Jones of Nashville were back on the House floor this week for a special session — focused on guns and public safety laws — Gov. Bill Lee (R) requested back in April.
It takes four armed men wearing bullet proof vests to remove one small woman and her piece of paper. She should have brought something more deadly, say, a Bible.
This isn’t a great show of self-confidence. The GOP reps are making their brittleness and rigidity transparently clear. It would be good for the Democrats to loudly pound the drum by asking everyone "What are they afraid of . . . "
The 2nd Amendment (loaded guns and the threat of violence) is the preferred way of killing the 1st Amendment (signs; freedom of expression) in the neoConfederate fascist states.
Tennessee is still a laughingstock, just as it was in the Scopes Trial era.
So there’s an active shooter at a TN school. And the school cop does what? Or the teacher who is allowed to have a gun in school to protect themselves and their students get shot dead because the police who showed up have no idea who the active shooter is.
And what does that show/tell students that their teachers, and random people have be armed for the 8 hours a day that the kids are in school?
So the First Amendment is against the rules of the TN legislature the republican members say. They mean our way or nothing. I hope the voters in TN understand that this is not democracy.
Seems to me that most Republican voters consider having their way democracy. Not getting their way doesn’t mean they’re wrong, in the minority, or that they have to accept something different. It just means non-white people are voting too much again.
