Tennessee Children Were Illegally Jailed. Now Members Of Congress Are Asking For an Investigation. | Talking Points Memo

Right now, there is a thread on my Next Door* feed with folks asserting that homeless people don’t need housing until they get jobs. Funnier still if you know I live in the very expensive heart of Silicon Valley where most of our homeless actually do have jobs.

“What about the people who have worked their tails off to put a roof over their heads? I am so sick of people who think they are entitled to things that other people have had to work for.”

*Next Door, a hive of scum & villainy.

There was an old bloom county cartoon that suggested that threat gay marriage posed to straights was showing women what an equal partnership looks like.

Here in the Windy City we refer to it as “Next Boor”!

Oh, I don’t know. While I’m sure there are nice incels out there (really!), they are completely upstaged by the Q-heads, tacticool strap-on-mah-machine-gun Proud Potatoes, 3pers, and free-floating militias of one form or another. This makes it all but impossible to discuss anything fact-based with the vast majority as they are deeply invested in the concept of social dominance through threats of violence against anyone who disagrees with them (including spouses and children). Obviously, this is a social problem. Also obviously, a lot of cops seem to fall into this same category, which is an even bigger social problem.

… well tonight you can look forward to 2 hours of TV time dedicated to:

While I applaud your desire to see the best in folks, I feel pretty sure that believing what incels believe in itself puts you outside the community of people who are nice.

And putting me outside the community of “nice people” differs from incels how exactly?

From your link: " An incel , an abbreviation of " involuntary celibate is a member of an online subculture of people who define themselves as unable to get a or sexual partner despite desiring one."

I’m not at all trying to start a fight, but if all people who want a romantic or sexual partner but don’t have one are terrible, then we are all terrible, or have been terrible.

The problem, I think, is the misogyny and rampant generalized misanthropy, or rather their refusal to accept responsibility for their own plight.

Like most people, this is the lens through which I view incels. That said, I do try to see at least some of them as just failing to mature, which doesn’t guarantee that they are bad people. Just emotionally stuck. I think.

Yes, it’s that complicated and confused in my head. I can’t expect other people to understand what I’m trying to say. I wish I were better with words.

I don’t think this definition is quite accurate. There are lots of people who are single despite wishing they weren’t and many of them are very nice people.

Incels, as I understand it, are men who define themselves as unable to get a sexual partner despite deserving one

They view women as prizes in the game of life. The misogyny is the point.

Unless you believe what incels believe, I’m not putting you outside the community of nice people. I might have said if “one” believes what they believe. If you do believe what they believe, that’s different. That first sentence from the Wikipedia article you quote is something of an incomplete picture of what they believe and how they carry on. If you’re doing that deliberately our acquaintance will be brief.

I would call most of these people “single,” not incels. The incel worldview is nuts.

Of course it is. People are complex. I am not an incel of any sort. Nor do I feel less of a person for lack of your regard.

Within any group (even cops!), there are people who don’t line up properly. My only point was that there is a statistical chance that there people without partners (a major part of the definition) who are not radicalized assholes until and unless they find a hive of shitty people online. I don’t see how this is controversial.

The misogynistic and misanthropic meme boys can fall off the edge of their flat earth and I’m fine with that. I’d help push a few myself. I feel much the same way about Trump voters: stupid, but a few just went in the wrong door, so maybe not evil. Lifelong gops, on the other hand, are just evil.

I also refuse to believe that all men in Montana maintain carnal relationships with livestock.

This is a movement that has defined itself, not merely a bullying label thrown at awkward or unfortunate people.

You can get a good education of the Manosphere… ie… MRAs, PUAs, Incels here:

OK this is just sophistry. You’re taking an absurd position and arguing for some theoretical number of exceptions among adherents to an inherently offensive and bad worldview. You might as well say you’re sure there was some people among the SS guards at Auschwitz who weren’t bad fellows personally. So yeah, you’re not a nice person. Not “one”. You. Not nice. And no matter what you say, you’re looking for a fight. You won’t get it from me. Permanently ignored is what you’ll get. Wave bye-bye.

This is why it is important to support Pro Publica.

No, I’m not. But, you do defensive you.

Yeah, it has certainly spiraled into a shit pit over the past couple of decades. Sad.

Did you see the Jordan Peterson thing where he essentially advocated women be slaves? Then went all communist advocating each male be issued a female, totally abandoning the free market of dating? I was agog.

No, I’m arguing that not everyone painted with a broad brush is innately evil. I try to keep an open mind about people. I understand from my own experience how broadly stereotypes are used to minimize the humanity of others.

I fully agree that a lot of people have worked hard to earn their reputation (Ben Shapiro, I’m looking at you). But, yes there are a small number of people who get branded without having earned it. Your mileage may vary.

Enjoy your angry white grievance. Hope I never see you again. (waves!)

Amen. So glad TPM switched to running propublica stories rather than using the AP wire on the weekends

Or, slightly less charitably, Republicans want more poorly educated White people born to manufacture a majority.
