MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The U.S. Supreme Court in a 5-4 decision Thursday blocked a lower court ruling allowing curbside voting in Alabama and waiving some absentee ballot requirements during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Electing Biden isn’t going to solve this problem. We have a rogue SCOTUS that is actively working against the best interests of the American people and against the right to vote in a representative Democracy. I don’t care how it’s done, it has to be fixed. This is not sustainable. Imagine global climate change mitigation programs stymied by a passive aggressive Supreme Court majority because “reasons” as the country suffers grave environmental and personal damage. We are a nation of men and women and the law should serve us as a collective, not just the rentier class.
Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s Biden’s MO to put additional justices on the court. If we win the Senate and the house, we need to pass voting laws so that it does not have to go to the damn court. And I hope they realize this is very high priority.
Essentially, we are under an occupation. By a minority. It is not as brutal as was the French in 1940-44.
Most of us can claim a shred of “continuity” in our lives…and before anyone starts saying “media” or “MSM”, they had better realize that the Fourth Estate is about all we have left.
It’s better than Resistance pamphlets that could get you killed for having, let alone reading.
Biden can nominate eleventy-dozen judges if he wants to, but they can’t be confirmed to seats that Congress has not provided for via legislation and presidential signature (or an overridden veto).
But who are they suppressing? This would seem to discourage older voters especially from participating. Do they really think such voters lean more toward the Democrats than other age groups? Did they learn nothing from the debacle in Wisconsin?
The Republican theory seems to include the assumption that reducing the total number of people who vote will favor them because their voters are more motivated. This is not an entirely crazy notion as Democrats seem generally more likely to skip an election, particularly in non-presidential election years.*
