Curbside Voting is pretty damned easy to do. I used to be an Election Official in Wisconsin, where curbside voting was allowed, but almost never used. Nobody much knew about it. I used to offer it, and even communicated the option to voters over the years. I would tell caregivers to park, come in and find me, and I took it from there. I went to the car, where the voter sat. I would take the voter’s ID back into the polling place, look his/her name in the ward book, sign it in and note what I had done. Take a ballot out to the car, return the ID. Remained there in case voter had any questions. Took the complete ballot in and ran it through the voting machine. Easy Peasy. Taught it to every poll worker in my wards (4 wards). We even did practice sessions before the elections. All it takes is a little compassion, foresight, and teaching. And the conviction that every eligible voter should be given the full opportunity to vote, under whatever options they may require to get it done. That was why I was there.
Shame on Alabama. May a big death star fall on the governor there.
She looks like a million other brunette hotties in showbiz, but when it comes to charmingly funny she’s just insanely gifted and I could never resist that.
No matter how small the Republican minority may become, they will always have unlimited funds and lawyers available to trash every democratic ideal in the judicial system, knowing that their best bet is to appeal all of the way to SCOTUS. Until this McConnell created imbalance is corrected in some way, progress will be halting and always reversible.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The U.S. Supreme Court in a 5-4 decision Thursday blocked a lower court ruling allowing curbside voting in Alabama and waiving some absentee ballot requirements during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Is it really written in the Constitution that the right to vote can only be exercised in person at a designated voting booth? I had no idea that “how” the vote is cast is a constitutional concern.
Wait til Mississippi takes their shot. Anyone who is less than cafe-au-lait on on a Glidden paint chip will be required to like the COVIDstone before they are allowed to vote.
Can anyone get a witness by the curb? Just set them up with a small table, a pitcher of lemonade, a beach umbrella, and a fan. They can soak their feet in a bucket of epsom salts while they’re witnessing.
That 73-0 figure had grown to 80-0 by March 2020. That 80 for corporate or big Republican donor interests vs 0 for average Americans. Deplorable
“Alabama is again able to enforce laws that help ensure the fairness and integrity of our elections,” the Republican said.
He later added, “We won’t allow Democrats and blacks to vote, either!”
Exactly WHY would letting people vote curbside affect the validity of the vote?
Fuckers.
So, I took some time to look at the Alabama Election Laws. It appears that a voter MUST be physically present in the polling place in order to cast a ballot. Basically, they would argue that that’s why absentee ballots are available. Since the ADA laws, and the Voting Rights Act (VRA) laws have been gutted and ignored, the cretinous states have gained the upper hand.
I think the ADA laws would be useful to argue the point. But, yes, Alabama seems to have thought about how to fuck over disabled voters, and even wrote it into their election laws.
ETA: @danny
Ah, thanks for that clarification.
Jeez, who would think that Alabama would have restrictive voting rules.
Everybody.
and also a big FU to anyone with a disability…
CJ Roberts 40+ year mission marches on.
Photocopies of signatures? What the hell for?
All the county has to do is compare my signature on the ballot with one on the copies of a myriad other documents I’ve signed. My driver’s license, for instance.
The ballot box I use is practically on the curb. Only the sidewalk is between it and the street. Been using it now since 2016. In the 2018 election the percentage of suspicious ballots was .027%. What’s the fucking problem?
Gosh, I wonder why they are making it so hard to vote? If Democrats are seeking to warp the election process, the Russians are having much better luck.
When the Democrats take over the Senate and the White House they better put two or three new judges on the supreme court Inc. Pack the courts with real people instead of right wing nutjobs.
Ware a mask and practice social distancing and wash your hands often.
15 of the last 19 Supreme Court justices were nominated by Republicans, despite the fact that Republicans have lost the popular vote in six of the last seven presidential elections. Four of the five conservatives currently on the court were appointed by Republicans who took office despite losing the popular vote. There is more than ample justification to add two new justices (how about Michelle & Barack?)
since McConnell blocked Garland.
And while we’re discussing this, can a president add more judges to lower federal courts as well? There is also more than ample justification to do that, since McConnell blocked dozens (hundreds?) of lower court nominees when Obama was president and then packed the lower courts with Federalist society ideologues. If Biden could add as many as McConnell blocked, he could nullify that scurrilous bastard’s ploy.
Then i would argue that their election law is unconstitutional. Thanks for looking that up, though.
Yeah, I wondered about that. Especially, how was this brought up in arguments to the SCOTUS?
This is an important case, especially for the State of Texas, in that the State Suoreme Court ruled that the individual who is under 65 can decide for themselves if they have sufficient health risks (not Covid19 fear) that would allow them to apply and vote by mail.
Can a State Supreme Court go back and revise their opinion?
