State GOPers Craft Wild Gambits To Wriggle Out Of Fed Gun Control Measures | Talking Points Memo

Faced with a Democratic Congress and White House, Missouri state Sen. Bill White (R) thought long and hard about legislative maneuvers he could pursue to shield his state’s residents from potential new gun laws out of Washington.

So…wouldn’t this mean their guns would be “registered” by their state?

I thought that was a huge No-NO among gunnists.

That’s nothing new. Missouri wives have complained about their minuteman husbands for decades.

Federal Preemption. This is what happens when not even the people elected to run the government were never taught how it works and don’t understand how it works.

Want to protect your guns from the government? Give them to your governor.

Could it not be argued that “regulations” come about by legislation and therefore a “well regulated militia” is one that is authorized and controlled by federal legislation? And without specific legislation there is, in fact, no militia that is “well regulated” for the purposes of the 2nd Amendment.

I mean as long as we are all grasping for straws…

A different question: What is it that authorizes the functioning of the National Guard? Just curious.

At least outside of Switzerland.

ETA: I have never understood the “I don’t want em to know I have one” but “I want to open carry” dilemma.

I don’t think Missouri would pass a background check if it wants to own all those guns.

My agents have authorization to shoot anything that wriggles and seems Trumpy.

I fully support this idea as long as these militias are well-regulated according to the standards we have for all armed forces in America. That means every militia member is identified, including all of the military equipment they possess. And of course, all militia members would be required to go through regular training and psychological testing to make sure we’re not arming crazies.

And yeah, these are the standards we should have for all gun owners, whether or not they want to pretend they’re in a militia. Maybe if we give them all participation badges we can get people to do this voluntarily.

These are people who simultaneously believe that the mere possibility of someone having a concealed weapon will intimidate bad guys out of doing crime, while also believing that open carrying their firearms shows how normal and not-at-all intimidating firearms really are.

Neither position is held in good faith.

I had heard that the “well regulated militia” of the several states and the United States was declared, by federal law, to be the National Guard? And that IS “well regulated.” Regular training, reasonably frequent deployments, generally for humanitarian purposes (which would be anathema to the gunny set), and you don’t get to “bring yer own.”

We’re long past due just repealing the 2nd. And getting rid of the “electoral college”. And Senate. And while we’re at it, bring back Civics education in the grades. Yeah, I want a pony, too.

When the first shot is fired the Minutemen will desert in a minute.

This.

How many positions does the right hold in good faith?

Gee, but wouldn’t this make the state and the Governor legally liable if one of these “minuteman’s” guns killed somebody? Such guns would be state property according to this cockamamie scheme, so the state would be responsible.

Yes and the State can be held responsible for each offense these nuts perform. Should go over very well.

Siging up with this state militia would be voluntary, right? We’re not talking about legislation that would take their guns away, just background checks is about it. So that being the case, how many people would actually line up to volunteer for this nonsense?
