Start Your Engines: Lineup Announced For Second Democratic Debate | Talking Points Memo

After a game show-esque, much drawn-out selection process on CNN, the lineups are official for the second Democratic debates scheduled for July 30 and 31.

Joe Biden better get ready for a double dose of the race card with Booker in his bracket this time.

I thought there were going to be a lot less on the lineup this time. What the heck is self-help author Marianne Williamson still doing here. Really? It’s just too much of a free for all.

What the heck is Reality TV Star and Con-man Donald Trump doing in the White House? :joy:

I may just watch night 1 with Warren. The first night was the only one worth watching last time.

Night 2 was a cluster-cuss with everyone babbling over each other trying to shiv Biden. Not to mention agreeing with any lunacy they thought expedient at the time.

Too many. Some of those don’t have a chance. You might check out Julian Castro. Every time he speaks on national television, his percentages go up.

Here’s an alternative lineup idea.

Night 1: Biden, Booker, Buttigieg (so much B!), Harris, Sanders, Warren
Night 2: let’s go golfing or something

So Harris gets to take another stab at Biden while Warren gets to knock off Sanders. This should be fun. At least the lineup is more balanced this time around.

So much old-man-pointy-finger potential!

(This is 90% Sanders, 10% Biden, but still)

What a great idea! Have a real debate among the serious contendors, and let the also-rans satisfy their egos.

Agreed, except that I’d limit the first debate to Democrats.

It was like a game show or a Powerball pick on CNN last night. But the cards played out for the top 5. Biden gets bookended by Booker and Harris while Sanders/Warren get to take on the ‘moderates’. Biden will be ready this time. He should go after Harris hard as her only card is race. Booker might even take a shot at Harris to improve his standing. Slow Joe could get frazzled by a desperate Gillabrand yelling and interrupting, but for all his shortcomings, he understands opportunity.

Another day, another terrible pair of line-ups. Biden and Harris basically have their own stage, and the anticipated fight there sucks out all the oxygen from the other stage.

Plus, and statisticians can fuck off with talk about random odds, but how in the fuck did all of the minority candidates end up on one night.

Yeah you never see that happening with the Republican debates.

The other possibility is that Harris and Warren could slide off the plateau they’re on now.

I thought the dude from Alaska made it into the debate field.

“game show-esque”

Possibly Dump’s most corrosive effect on the democratic process. Assuming we have one after he’s done.

CNN has been doing that type of thing long before drump. They love their countdowns and graphics etc.

I hate the primaries because commenters turn against one another on lefty sites. And this year , I am anxious to unite against the evil Donald. But if I didn’t have this deep anxiety, I think the way the Dems are doing it is very inclusive, and the I like that the leadership is not controlling who gets chosen. The people are in the process, with their support for each candidate. So, yeah, there are quite a few candidates who seem to be taking up the airwaves just to flatter themselves and I feel like they are wasting my time, but I am just gonna be patient and wait it out, knowing that my fellow Dems are not going to choose someone who has no experience in government and is not qualified for the job.

Barring a surprise in this month’s debates, your Night 1 lineup is roughly what we will get in September’s debate.
