Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Cory Booker (D-NJ), both of whom serve on the Senate Judiciary Committee, called for Justice Clarence Thomas to recuse himself from election cases in light of his wife’s texts to former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows urging the then-Trump official to push Big Lie efforts in the weeks after the 2020 election.
Gee, I hope all of these trials and travails caused by the rampant batshittery of his fat ugly wife (no, not Mrs. Ted Cruz. The OTHER ugly wife) doesn’t cause Clarence to have an aneurysm or anything like that. Heaven forbid!
Thomas is corrupt but he is hardly unique in that regard. I suppose the better question is how this gets folded into the larger case that needs to be made: how to expand the court and restore the legitimacy that conservatives had damaged.
What has happened with the judge’s wife, Mr. Booker, is that she is a sedition-supporting piece of shit who needs to be hauled before the committee. Stop being polite.
Scalia refused to recuse himself from many obvious conflict of interest cases also. The simple fact is that anything that requires an “honor system” as it’s main enforcement mechanism is destined to fail miserably from this point forward - the Repubs have shown nothing matters to them except power, and honor is just an inconvenient joke to them.
This demand from the senators is very soundly based on the canons of judicial ethics and the law. It will go nowhere because Justice Thomas alone has the ultimate say on whether he recuses himself. He has clearly shown that he does not care about the canons of judicial ethics or the law. He began his journey to the Supreme Court by lying under oath at his confirmation hearing. Since then, he has many times heard and decided cases in which he clearly should have recused. The only remedy is impeachment–and that won’t happen either.
