Senate Democrats on Wednesday swiftly rebuked their GOP colleagues shortly after Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) objected to Democrats’ unanimous consent request to pass the Right to Contraception Act.
Later on, the article makes the point I was going to make about the headline: that objecting to unanimous consent does not “distract” but, on the contrary, calls attention, with clarion-like clarity, to that extreme position.
Always get rid of the difficult bit in the title. Hopefully, that will inoculate it to Manchin’s worst inclinations…how could he oppose inflation reduction, it’s in the name!?
Ernst argued the bill includes provisions that could provide funding for abortion providers, could expand access to abortion-inducing drugs and would force providers to administer contraceptives despite their moral or religious beliefs
Until Manchin has actually made his vote, we need to assume that this is just another of his standard Lucy/Football ploys. And, this is an act that is getting really old and tedious.
Over 100 years ago, the New York politician Al Smith noted that the greatest insult you say about any legislator in the state was: “We deal in writing.” This signaled that you could never trust the person to keep to their word. Manchin is now in that category.
The Senate Dems are making the republicans squirm on their contraception positions. I just saw the headline about Manchin. I was like wtf?
It’s been a very good day.
Oh, and it looks like Brittney Griner and Whelan (from Novi, Michigan, who was taken into custody when Dumbo was prez - wasn’t he a Trumper?) might just be coming home. Great news.
One of the most disturbing trends of our time is the Republican right’s redefinition of religious freedom to mean, not the freedom to practice your religion on a personal basis, but the “freedom” to control the behavior of others and to impose your religious doctrine on others.
Seems to me if your a doctor with sincerely held religious beliefs why are you in a field of medicine that deals with women reproductive parts? Maybe there could be some system of national symbol to warn new patients what your sincerely held religious beliefs will allow and forbid.
If we guarantee access then those people will go to planned parenthood (aka the only clinic they can afford) to get the contraception prescription or device of their choice. Which means PP gets more money
[lastroth again]???
Plan B and the pill. That’s not actually how they work, but, you know how it is on the right wing.
