FWIW, I read @ryanbirr’s comment as criticizing Justice Roberts, not Senator Whitehouse.
It seems that the average GOP powermonger is convinced that the general populace is either too ignorant or ill-informed or has a nano-attention span to care. Unfortunately, that all seems true.
Has anybody seen Dick Durbin lately? Just asking.
A power not granted by the Constitution, but arrogated by SCOTUS to itself.
They don’t actually have lifetime appointments.
According to the Constitution, they serve during “good behavior.”
It’s not really a stretch to posit that having ethical lapses and continued conflicts of interest do not fall under the rubric of “good behavior.”
Keep the pressure on! That’s his job as a member of the judiciary committee.
Great new vocabulary word. Thanks!
I’m glad that at least Senator Whitehouse got caught trying instead of wringing his hands and tut-tutting about this shameful state of affairs.
Just imagine Scooby trying to pronounce this word…
But said nothing about Clarence? Pfft…
But the questions have been asked repeatedly:
What constitutes ‘good behavior’ and, second, who’s going to make that determination?
I see nothing and no one on the horizon that will clarify these questions.
That milquetoast is still searching Lost and Found for his spine.
My point of contention with this is the notion that they are “bought” at all. It feels more like a “bonus” system to reward them for things they were inclined to do anyway. It’s still a massive impropriety, but it’s not like their loyalty could be bought at some price to make them start issuing opposite edicts. (With the possible exception of paying them enough to get out of the game entirely, h/t @txlawyer.)
$50 million in duly appropriated funds for the first MF’er to plop his unconditional and immediate resignation letter on the Secretary of State’s desk. $40 million for the second. Etc.
Perfectly legal and can pass the Senate under reconciliation rules.
Whitehouse belongs in the White House.
Some good old fashioned public bothering—yelling, making restaurant experiences painful, etc seems to be in order.
As Whitehouse noted in the letter, there’s no body apart from the court itself which really exists to hold justices accountable or police them for misconduct.
Uh, yeah, there is. It’s the Congress of the United States. Sadly, one house is being smothered by a troop of flying monkeys. Further, there will never be 67 votes in the Senate to remove any of these crooks. I’m going with @txlawyer suggestion. Pay them to leave….
Give the top brackets an IKE TAX HIKE.
Income tax rates under Eisenhower were as high as 90 percent.
THIS.
Is there any other kind of Catholicism? Of all the stupid religions in the world, this one takes the cake. Or should I say, altar boys.
