SCOTUS Breaks Silence, Dashes Hopes As Conservatives Let Texas Abortion Ban Stand | Talking Points Memo

Maybe the Visigoths weren’t the barbarians…or at least not the only ones?

I hear that the “law” has a 4-year window. So can I start going after people who aided and abetted women who aborted 3 years ago?

Because I’d really like to sue Abbott, who received benefits from aborted fetus cells - in his Covid medicine.

Joe is holding presser right now about NYC flooding. He will likely address this, too.

This is a line outside a bank in Kabul. The country will have an economic collapse because of the Taliban.

No, you cannot. Applying the the new statute retroactively would make it an unconstitutional ex post facto law.

With some number of Cotton Mathers leading the prosecution.

The Visigoths got a bad rap. Their Sack of Rome, compared to the normal standards of a victorious army having their way with a city captured after a prolonged siege, was pretty restrained. They took plenty of loot, but ended up doing minimal structural damage, and honored the sanctuary status of the main basilicas of Peter and Paul.

The history of it all, however, was written mostly by the Romans, who did take a rather dim view of being pillaged.

The SCOTX are nothing but a bunch of wingnut wackos.

Now, why would that bother any of the Goobers since they’ve already trampled on the Constitution. Roe v Wade is not dead yet. It probably will die shortly but it’s not dead yet.

So much for nation building.

Imma hazard a guess here that I know that court a hell of a lot better than you.

What else about the law is constitutional?

edit- I’m not questioning your understanding of this or any other law, but I’m just curious because nothing about this law appears to be constitutional at all.

Guarantee, this will be a disaster. Recall the guy who impulsively attacked the MSNBC reporter? Those types are all over. Now just strap a gun to his waist.

Both Manchin (especially) and Sinema are very aware that Dems have no margin and can’t afford to piss them off to the point that they refuse to cooperate on infrastructure reconciliation, voting rights, etc. Also, the primary challenge threat is ludicrous in Manchin’s case; there’s no way we get a Dem Senator not named Joe Manchin out of that state.

Dumbest thing we have ever tried to do. I spent 3 months in Afghanistan in 1970 and I can attest that “Western style democracy” is an utterly foreign idea there and things that are foreign in that sphere are not welcome. Pashtunwali is the over arching code of conduct and mix it with Islam and the idea of an American style of representative government there (with all due respect) just will not work.
Then again the Taliban version of “government” very likely won’t work either. And if other countries have any sense at all Afghanistan will be a pariah nation for the foreseeable future. I am glad I got to see the “Bamyan Buddhas” before the Taliban blew them to dust.

They sure were, and no there weren’t the only ones, the Ostrogoths, Vandals, Huns and a bunch of others. The definition back then was all of those that didn’t speak Latin nor Greek were barbarians, maybe some exception was made for Persians. But Greek was spoken in Egypt, Turkey and Levant, that is why the gospels were written in that language.

Yea I have little respect, or confidence in the SCOTX.

[Texas] is on the verge of turning into something very medieval

If Republicans insist on everybody playing the lute, they’ll have to pry my Les Paul out of my cold, dead hands.
