Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) on Sunday said that he is working with President Biden to find the extra votes needed to confirm Neera Tanden, Biden’s nominee for Office of Management Budget director, after Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) announced his opposition to Tanden’s confirmation.
I don’t see how it’s possible. No Republican would likely support a candidate Manchin refused to support. Why would they? What’s in it for them outside of the likelihood of being ostracized by their Party? Schumer would have better luck finding Republicans to support the Green New Deal or Medicare for All.
You could parse it that way, but I was thinking more along the lines of the actual GQP voting as a monolithic block, rather than viewing the merits, or demerits, of a candidate.
I agree wholeheartedly. It’s interesting that Biden hasn’t just given up here, and the fact remains that some of the Senators who voted against Trump and/or are retiring may be in play. The Republican Party is divided and as such, it’s difficult to for them to keep score on every issue (and this is probably a minor one, at that) consumed as they are with the infighting.
Manchin’s stated reasons for voting against her is being overly partisan -as if every Trump appointee wasn’t - but he has nothing negative to say about her competency or ability to actually do the job. It’s a strange game these Senators play, and I wouldn’t be surprised either way.
In my humble opinion, if you’re looking at this Republican Party and not tearing your hair out, there’s something not quite right about you. So I appreciate Neera Tanden.
I appreciate that too. While it’s unlikely any Republican will support her now, I could see Murkowski or Romney voting for her for no other reason than because they understand the shitty optics of the full GOP voting against a woman of color who’d be a first to hold the position. If they truly want their party to stop being the party of crazy, insurrectionist racists this might be a good place to start reflecting that notion.
I may get jumped on for saying this, but I believe that there are millions of people who are Republicans NOW who would not have stood out as RINOs in the 1970s. They have been cowed by the Base, since the Gingrich Days and even before that…
Those public figures like Rubin, Frum, Wilson, Wallace and others of the Lincoln Project mold are one thing…but I believe that they are matched by ordinary folks.
It’s time to set the table back to 1974, when R’s could actually say things that were said to Nixon and not have some Post Truth Demagogue/RWNJ propaganda mouther decry their very existence.
I cannot speak to Manchin’s motivations here, but if he’s loudly proclaiming his independence from the Democratic Party here in order to support potential filibuster reform later, I would grudgingly accept that exchange because we desperately need voter reform. But again, I have no idea if that is his thought process.
