Schumer Says He’s Working With Biden To Find Votes For Tanden After Manchin Opposition | Talking Points Memo

Eh, Politics is about exchanging chits.

I hope Biden team doesn’t get stuck on this.

Someone always goes down as someone else observed in an earlier thread.

Getting a R Senator vote is I suppose worth a try, but will have a price. Worth paying… hard to say?

(but doubt a vote is to be had)

If only Schumer and/or Biden had any carrots or sticks they could use to bring Joe Manchin in line.

I would think that the AAPI community who are advocating for Tandan would be pushing Murkowski since Alaska has a sizable AAPI along with native population along with other persuadable senators like Collins.

What’s bothering me is that he’s throwing in with the Counter Factual Party to use Rosen’s phrase. He might genuinely not like Neera Tanden’s tweets, but the opposition is based in a lie and her tweets are irrelevant to her competence.

He’s without doubt building some political capital - what he wants to use if for remains to be seen.

For me this is a shrug.

This is the Fox News Problem.

It’s dragged the Activist part of the Republicans into a never-never-land. Drum is right here, Fox is the source of evil here…

I look at “media” (a term which I hate…I would rather say “Fourth Estate” or “The Press”) in the same light as I look at other areas like Law Enforcement, Secondary Education and Higher Education.

I have relatives in the first category, my wife is in the second and I am in the third.

All have practitioners who abuse the field by personal and structural negligence. My favorite whipping boy for the Press is Les Moonves, for example.

We were saved from Trump by the Fourth Estate, which informed us in a way that a totalitarian-regime “information” bureau would not.

All information organs (Newsmax, FOX, the networks, the print sectors) rely on patronage and I am going to do my part and not patronize lies.

I guess Joe Manchin forgets he may need something one day.

I’m not really convinced she’s worth going to the mat for, given her defense of some pretty bad policy and her feud with the Sanders camp. It’s not just Republicans and conservative Dems who are pissed about her nomination.

If you assume that every Senator (or relevant person) she twitticized is now ready to forgive, forget, and work with her as needed.

Forget about the tweets/emails or whatever. I’ve read that she is in favor of gutting Social Security and has several other positions that are not the best.

If she is not really the best candidate then find a few more Dems to stand with Manchin. And NOT because of tweets/emails - but on substance.

'overtly partisan” statements that Tanden had made about lawmakers on both sides of the aisle…

Ummm what?

Really?

She’s a Democrat very much in the vein of (or was for some reason willing to defend nearly everything done by) Hillary Clinton.

Make of this what you will!

I’m not sure - it shows a particular tone deafness and combativeness that is counter productive. If your goals and jobs are to work on government policy, then shooting off about politicians like she was just an internet poster is pretty self destructive.

That’s the hope I cling to with things like the Harris-in-WV food fight and even the ‘I won’t nuke the filibuster’ stance–that they are independence theater.

If a GOP vote for Tanden were “found” now, but had in truth been quietly secured beforehand, it would amount to more of the same: Manchin gets a free pass for a maverick-y “no” vote that doesn’t actually block anything.
