Sen. Joe Manchin’s (D-WV) latest torpedoing of a deal carefully negotiated within the Democratic caucus provoked Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-VT) very candid anger over the weekend.
Bernie won the Democratic primaries in both Michigan and Wisconsin because he traveled outside the metro areas and appealed to the white working class.
Off topic: when did this forum decile to the point where people line up to claim “first”? Seems that this stupidity started in the last month or so and now every thread has it. LAME
Manchenema is a problem. The greater problem is fifty lock step rethugs refusing to work for the country’s, and the world’s, future. In fact, they are purposely sabotaging it because they think it is to their electoral advantage.
Bernie won both states in 2016 (and only by 1 point in MI) because lots of people dislike Hillary Clinton for various reasons, including but not limited to Clinton Fatigue and misogyny.
At this point, it would really be smarter just to assume he’ll be a “no” (because nothing, but nothing EVER satisfies him) and start working on various Republicans. Maybe some of those who aren’t running for re-election and have less to lose. Dump Susan Collins, too: she perfected “Manchinism” before there was a Manchin.
Work like hell to expand the Democratic Senate numbers through elections. It’s the only way to marginalize Manchin who is bought by wealthy special interest groups that support him.
This; two more reliable Democratic votes and we tell Manchinema and #moscowmitch to pound sand. I know it’s a big ask, but I really, really hope it will happen.
With the filibuster in place, all 50 Republicans in the Senate can simply join with the others in lockstep, opposing any legislation, regardless of how sensible and/or popular it is - even with their own constituents, because they never have to publicly speak to it. The filibuster itself simply has to go. Only electing enough Democratic Senators (i.e., keeping those already there and adding two more) will accomplish that before the Republicans have the majority and inevitably do it.
And I find that deeply disheartening. Worse, people who get screwed by GOP politics will vote for them.
I’m talking about people without a pot to pee in who vote GOP.
