Republicans Will Need Democrats’ Help to Fund the Gov’t Again In Early 2026

Another possible standoff over government funding may be brewing on Capitol Hill. Congress has until Jan. 30 to pass the remaining appropriations bills to fund the federal government for the remainder of this fiscal year, or to vote on a new continuing resolution to keep the government open. That self-imposed deadline is the result of…

We have seen this story before and know how it ends. The only interesting part of it will be the drama leading up to the concession by the Dems, who’ll get nothing in the negotiation.

What foolhardy demand will the Dems make and the GQP ignore this time?

It’s called kicking the can down the road, it is what the government does best and has a long tradition starting with slavery.

“announced last weekend they have reached an agreement on the overall totals for the remaining nine funding bills Congress needs to pass”

“Reached an agreement” – but with who? (whom?) The other Republicans? The White House? It sounds as if Republicans are still only negotiating among themselves (at best), with the final word coming from the latest whim and rage of their lord and master in the Gilt House.

I still don’t understand the legalities of the legislative process. If legislation, spending or otherwise, comes out of the Congress, and the President signs it, how can the President unilaterally undo e.g. claw back the funding that was (seemingly legally) mutually agreed upon. I know that the daffy ruling by the SCOTUS giving immunity for “Presidential actions under his/her authority,” but how can it apply to these types of situations. Anyone? Maybe I haven’t had enough coffee this morning (or a lingering hangover), but the unitary executive theory just seems like pure BS and undercuts the balance of powers doctrine. If legislative funding is to be undone, shouldn’t that too require legislation to enable that action? Please, scholarly, common sense replies only. LOL!!!

Democrats have another opportunity to grab some much needed attention to their cause.

Will they take it?

waiting on congressional Republicans to come to a consensus amongst themselves

Republicans, do you realize that a lack of consensus means half of your comrades completely disagree with you?

Not after the Court declares Congress unconstitutional.

Were you serious about “common sense” ; - )

The GQP has also seen this story before. They will make a solemn promise to hold a floor vote on whatever Schumer and Jeffries demand at some time after Trump signs whatever bill they pass. This is no longer even good Kabuki theater.

News reports indicate tetanus is on the rise, as more people disregard vaccines. So, what’s the effect of tetanus?

Tetanus is a bacterial infection characterized by muscle spasms. In the most common type, the spasms begin in the jaw and then progress to the rest of the body. Each spasm usually lasts for a few minutes. Spasms occur frequently for three to four weeks. Some spasms may be severe enough to fracture bones.

Other symptoms of tetanus may include fever, sweating, headache, trouble swallowing, high blood pressure, and a fast heart rate. Recovery may take months; about 10% of cases prove to be fatal.

He can’t. Unless he’s TFG. The Republicans did pass that recissions act to justify a small portion of it retroactively. $9 billion. Part of it involved defunding public broadcasting (including Sesame Street!) and foreign aid and killing 14 million children.

I can see if for some reason if the US was attacked, which would justify “Presidential actions under his/her authority”. But the only attack the US is under is DonOLD J. Trump. Again he’s acting liking he’s the sole owner of this Corporation US of A.

The Supreme Court allowed Trump to withhold $4 billion in USAID funding on the theory that the president has some level of authority over foreign affairs. The Court also allowed him to withhold another $4 billion in SNAP benefits without any explanation.

This Court will manufacture out of whole cloth a previously unknown constitutional power that allows the president to withhold appropriated funds that relate to the functions of any executive department, all of which are under the direction and control of the hallowed unitary executive. The Court will apply its new doctrine on a case-by-case basis, issuing inconsistent opinions that follow political ideology rather than consistent legal analysis.

There is no common sense, there is only the reality that the GOP has finally reached the level of power across all three branches that is necessary to enact the dreams envisioned by Reagan, Gingrich, et al.

Tetanus used to be called Lockjaw for obvious reasons. The vaccine most people get is Tdap (Tetanus/Diptheria/Pertussis) and is recommended once every 10 years. Pertussis is another name for Whooping Cough, another affliction that has become more common again in recent years. Even I (in spite of getting allergic reactions to some vaccines) can and do get Tdap as recommended.

Republicans know for sure now that all they need to do is threaten the filibuster and Democrats will cave, so why go through the motions?*** It’s the perfect analog to the filibuster itself.

***This is a rhetorical question to highlight Democrats’ unwillingness to leverage power.

I believe “weaponization,” as in weaponization of government processes must be taken seriously. My scholarly and streetwise self, together, are of the opinion that, when the muzzle of the weapon is pointed at oneself, the issues are no longer intellectual but are about character and moral choice. This retrograde, immoral, criminal front for an international club of oligarchs must be identified as slave masters who think they own us. They must be opposed in whatever ways available to free and responsible citizens.
