President Donald Trump didn’t crack a single smile when he called on China and Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden last week, but his Republican colleagues on Sunday insisted he was just messing around.
See, the problem is Trump as private citizen can freely say, “just kidding” after threatening someone; a bully and a prick, sure, but he can.
Trump the POTUS (even as Fake POTUS) is not free to do so and can not. Full stop.
Once this fails — because Trump isn’t joking — the Trump sycophants will then say: “come on! We all know Trump lies a lot. Why do we believe him now?”
WTF else will they do? They’re still doing everything they possibly can to mitigate this thing.
The farce is happening because there is no real arbiter of the truth. The press has allowed for truthiness for too long.
The follow up question should had been - in 2016, folks said that then candidate Trump was kidding when he said that Russia should go after Hillary Clinton’s e-mail while the Russians were doing that exact thing. Given that history, is there any way not to take the President 100% seriously when he says something like this?
Then why lock down the notes of the conversation with China from earlier this year?
And why did China respond as though Trump was serious?
If these hors#%t defenses weren’t born of bottomless bad faith (i.e. to be forgotten the moment a Democrat takes office again), it’d be really fun to hold the GOP to these new rules.

I have watched trump’s comment on China investigating the Biden clan and trump was not joking or kidding around. If that was joking then trump has zero humor in his body. Besides right now trump is not… repeat not in a joking mood. Just look at his twitter feed.
And that whole call with Zelensky was just a prank phone call. Such a kidder.
Nothing joking about it…not even the warped, twisted behavior that donnie displays when he is making a “joke”…like when a follower yelled that immigrants should be shot and donnie said something like “that would only be okay here in the panhandle.”

Damn, I had it all wrong for these past years. Trump was just kidding when he asked China and Ukraine to investigate Biden, when he told Kim it was Love, when he couldn’t figure out why the intelligence agencies said Russia screwed the election and Crimea was Obama’s fault.

Well, sure, it’s all comedy. Zelenskiy’s a comedian. It’s hilarious that in Ukraine they believe Putin used our president to set Zelenskiy up to weaken his negotiating position.

Dems’ job is to make it easier for Repubs who’ve never been especially keen on Trump to turn on him, and make it harder for Repubs who’ve licked his boots to keep on supporting him. They have to provide the former with a soft landing way of abandoning Trump, and the latter the promise of a crash and burn hard landing if they don’t. That’s what impeachment is really all about. Divide and conquer.
He’s kidding like he was kidding about asking Russia to find Hillary’s emails – a request that was followed immediately by a testy extended exchange with Katy Tur where he tried to justify himself and threw in a gratuitous insult of Katy for good measure.
It’s an incredibly subtle form of kidding.
I’d say it’s more like hangman.
His “joke” was delivered the way a mobster might tell an “amusing” anecdote about baseball…
