The Republican response to the Alabama Supreme Court ruling that found embryos are considered children in wrongful death lawsuits — a finding that has thrown into question the future of IVF in the state — has been weird. Republican senators, governors and presidential candidate Nikki Haley are all trying to toe some imaginary line between declaring they believe embryos are, in fact, “babies” while still maintaining their support for the procedure as a good tool for helping adults conceive children. Most of them also mention all of this with the caveat that they haven’t actually read the ruling.
Frist! This is what happens when you fight for a can of worms to be opened, and it finally is. There were people that were saying IVF and contraceptives would the next targets after Roe. It’s past time to realize these folks are not reasonable- they are fanatics.
And having DJT demand that any deal on the border be squashed dead like a bug, is not an election year gimmick? Trump came right out and said he wants the use the border as a campaign issue. This is blatant hypocrisy.
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) on Thursday said reports that President Biden is considering using his executive authority to address the situation at the southern border amount to “election year gimmicks.”
Cavuto at Fox seems to be getting it.
From Aaron Rupar
Cavuto to GOP. Rep Tony Gonzales: “Didn’t that package really fail because Donald Trump didn’t want it, and many in your party are scared stiff of the guy? You didn’t want to offend him, you didn’t want to tick him off.”
Elected GOPers: “You know, I haven’t read the decision. My understanding is that it’s written in Sanskrit, and while I did tell my staff to make it a top priority to get me set up with a correspondence course in Sanskrit for Fall 2024, right now, I can’t make heads or tails of the thing. But I should be good to go by December 24. Why, yes, you’re right, that is right after the election, and you have a point, that does sound something like a happy coincidence for me. You know what, that’s my cell, gotta take this call. See ya in December!”
Kinda like a mule with a spinning wheel… no one knows how he got it, and he has no idea what to do with it. No one knows what to do with that utterly insane ruling. Unfortunately, it won’t just go away if we ignore it.
“I do think that if you look in the definition, an embryo is considered an unborn baby. And if you have any questions about that, which you do, why I suggest you take them up with the definition."
Every damn time a Republican governor, senator, representative, etc. is asked about an unpopular decision that they pushed for, we get the same response: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-BFY9IkUt8w
Typical republican politician - ‘I’ll make my thoughts on this issue clear once I’ve received feedback from the diners in Toad Suck, Arkansas. So, NYT, what are you hearing?’
First off, what the Alabama court is talking about is BLASTOCYSTS, not embryos. Those blastocysts are, at the most, 200 cells. What parents decide to do with them after THEY FEEL their family is complete is of no concern to me.
There is nothing hard about this decision from an ideological standpoint. If you believe human embryos deserve full personhood, then your position is quite clear: you are opposed to IVF in all circumstances. Anything less is ideological compromise, and demonstrates that you don’t actually believe that human embryos are full human persons.
I suspect the vast majority of forced birthers don’t actually believe that human embryos are human persons.
Edit: when I was, and this was decades ago, a believer in limiting abortion rights, I came to the conclusion that IVF was immoral. My opinion on abortion has radically changed, due to life experience, and realizing how profoundly sexist my position was. I still am uneasy about IVF, but absolutely see the nuance, and certainly wouldn’t base any ethical conclusions for other people on my own uneasiness.
“Well, first of all, I didn’t — I mean, this is again, I didn’t say that I agreed with the Alabama ruling. What the question that I was asked is, ‘Do I believe an embryo is a baby?’” she told CNN. “I do think that if you look in the definition, an embryo is considered an unborn baby. And so, yes, I believe from my stance that that is.”
Nikki Haley lied (I know, big surprise). That is not the question that she was asked. She was asked if she agreed with the Alabama Supreme Court’s ruling.
