Deflection, ducking and hasty backpedaling have been the hallmarks of many of the 2024 Republican president candidates’ approach to abortion, a sea change from the not-so-distant past when it was their party’s key electoral carrot.
The problem for Republican candidates is stark. The Republican base is primarily grayheaded white evangelical Christians who are convinced abortion is murder. The Republican party churned the issue for decades convincing people that Democrats who defended Roe v. Wade were blood sucking monsters who had to be stopped. Compromise is impossible when you are taling about any culture issue but it is even worse when you are dealing with boold thirsty homicidal monsters.
It was an easy position for Republicans to take. Who believed the Supreme Court would overturn Roe? They were shocked when it happened. Suddenly they are defending and it is easy to paint them as monsters in favor of killing mothers with troubled pregnancies or forcing 10 year olds to give birth. The numbers just aren’t on the side of the Republicans. The abortion mess is exactly why fighting culture wars is a stupid way to do politics.
I’m not sure why anyone would be surprised by these deflections and non-answers. Has no one watched any Supreme Court nomination hearings in the last 40 years?
For how many years now has it all been about not leaving a paper trail? I look forward to DeSantis explaining why he signed a 6 week ban in Florida, but doesn’t know what he’d do if came to him as President. “Um, uh, ah, I’m the non-Trump Trump, uhhhhhhhh”
Anchor Jake Tapper asked Haley whether she would sign a six-week gestational ban, if it came to her desk in the White House.
“I will answer that when you ask Kamala and Biden if they would agree to 37 weeks, 38 weeks, 39 weeks,” she responded. “Then I’ll answer your question.”
It’s not just abortion. Guns, climate change, taxes, regulation. A great deal of the Republican platform is unpopular, or deeply so, as on abortion. That’s why it’s going to be wall to wall “trans people are going to put a spell on your kids”. They’re betting that they can get 50% of an already-voter-suppressed electorate to hating on trans people. I hate to say it but it may be close.
Nikki Haley says that illegal guns have to be taken off the streets, while simultaneously she opposes “red flag” gun laws because she doesn’t trust the government to enforce them. How does she plan to get illegal guns off of the streets if she doesn’t trust the government?
I hate Nikki Haley’s face. Both of them.
Jake Tapper dropped the ball on follow-up questions.
I would simply remind Nimrata that if she is not the “pregnant person” in question, she should shut the hell up. (While I completely support the rights of anyone to sleep with, dress like, or emulate any gender, I refuse to accept the phrase “a pregnant man.” No such thing, sorry. Pregnant “transman”? By all means, but I guarantee we will never read of a pregnant transwoman. It’s simply an issue of grammar with me.)
“I will answer that when you ask Kamala and Biden if they would agree to 37 weeks, 38 weeks, 39 weeks,” she responded. “Then I’ll answer your question.”
Of course both Biden and Harris have already made clear that abortion should be between a woman and her Doctor. Thus no abortion laws. Shame on Tapper for not pointing that out.
The purchase and open carry of a SWAT rifle should be considered the new gender affirming care. You can’t tell me the ad-men at Bushmaster didn’t know what they were selling.
