I would guess whether they get access to the content would depend on whether or not they had some need that would persuade a judge to issue a subpoena. I’m guessing here because l don’t know what investigating a hack involves.

Well, whoever is tasked with cleanup would certainly need complete access to the system if they intended to try to clean it up. The goal would be not only to figure out how they got in (and there are lots of ways to break into a computer), but also to look for “things left behind”. This might be something as simple as files that have had info changed, it could be backdoors that allow the bad guys to come back in when they feel like it, it could be “timebombs” that are set to go of later, either damaging things or simply making copies of data and shipping it out without anyone knowing it’s being done.

Frankly, the safest thing to do would be to wipe and restore from a secure backup, but chances are that those might be compromised, as well (if they even exist) so a complete forensic analysis should really be done by folks who know what they’re doing. I could see the government arguing that this should be their experts, since it affects American election security, but if not the RNC needs to find somebody with a tad more skill than those Cyber Ninja idiots for this one…

This hack is terrible news.

One of America’s bitterest enemies has for six years had uninterrupted access to the most sensitive records kept by America’s dominant political party.

And one of the first things any intruder does is to attempt privilege escalation: to turn a foothold into a chokehold.

Still Manchin and Sinema dither. It is already too late: even if S1 were signed into law today, there would not be time to secure the 2022 elections. The fix is in for 2022, which means 2024 is lost, and so on. We had a narrow opportunity to bolt the door, but nobody had the good sense to take Manchin & Sinema by the scruff of the neck and compel them to do their duty.

My dad was always skeptical of statistical studies such as this, usually remarking, “a restatement of the obvious.”

Granted, one point of the article is talking about governmental power and institutions in the future, but my dad’s take-away would be that it shouldn’t be a surprise that women don’t want to date someone whose political views are working against the women’s self-interests.
