Agreed. I really hate the “tough guy”, confrontational style of politics (looking at you, Rahm Emanuel), but this needs to follow due process.
Since I haven’t heard any suggestion of criminal activity, what due process are you talking about.
I guess I meant the colloquial political due process.
A fifth woman named Anna Ruch accused Cuomo of holding her face and kissing her without consent.
The photo in the Times of that stomach-turning face lock by Cuomo’s powerful hands around Anna Ruch’s cringing/smiling/fearful face is evidence beyond a mere “accusation.”
Hmmmm… it’s almost as if they actually WANT to be in a situation with a huge power imbalance between themselves and their victim - I mean romantic interest… /s
Yes, there is a constitutional process.
The 150 members of the State Assembly, currently 106 of whom are Democrats, can impeach on a simple-majority vote. If they try and fail, I’d hate to be them. If they succeed, Cuomo is sort of “suspended” and the Lt. Gov. takes over, at least temporarily.
A trial would be held in an “impeachment court,” largely the same as the State Senate (with the addition of certain senior judges). In total there would be sixty-nine jurors; two thirds would have to vote for conviction. Currently more than two thirds can be considered Democrats. If the Senate convicts (or if Cuomo resigns), the Lt. Gov. takes over for the remainder of his term; and he can also be barred from seeking office again.
Whereas if he is acquitted, he continues in office, the Lt. Gov. goes back to being the Lt. Gov., and Albany will become totally uninhabitable.
Yes, over the years, I’ve lost count of how many pages Andrew Cuomo has taken from Republicans.
Of the five women who have come forward, one had to deal with him while he was in the Clinton Administration.
How about the other four?
Not just Trump. See Thinkprogress: Yglesias, key to surviving sex scandal, don’t resign..
Eh anyway, while no fan of Cuomo’s, I do think that it’s not wrong to not resign - not specifically re him, but before there’s investigation etc. as otherwise one opens up the door further and further to Kompromat games (recalling the faux scandal re the sketchy lady and Biden, which had some here calling for Biden to withdraw).
There’s a process, follow it.
Thanks. Sounds very much like Federal process–majority lower, 2/3 upper. Goes nowhere?
Man this is tricky. It is the internal contradiction of favoring what is seen as a disadvantaged group. The normal rules of ‘fairness’ are not considered to be ‘fair’ in practice due to power disparities. For example, women in Japan have long suffered from groping perverts on trains. Thus, as a reaction, if a woman on a crowded train accuses a nearby man of groping her, he will be found guilty basically 100% of the time, with almost no hope of vindication. The theory is that the courage the oppressed victim shows in daring to speak must be respected. This has resulted in serious miscarriages of justice. On the other hand, if you apply strict evidentiary rules, the odds are that the vast majority of women who raise their voices would simply be either shamed or ignored.
It’s a couple’s private business if there is a power imbalance in their relationship. The problem is when the alleged more powerful of the two is a workplace superior of the other.
Cuomo Told NY Senate Leader He’ll Leave Office Only If He Get Impeached
Ambiguous. Does this mean he’ll resign if impeached but not convicted, or is he saying they’ll have to impeach and convict him, like it says in the NY constitution? In which case, there is no resign, his departure will be involuntary.
The notable exception being that, in New York, as noted, the impeached office-holder does not exercise the powers of the office while being tried.
Headline and expository sentence, and the entire meaning of the article (as written, it appears to imply he’ll resign if impeached but not convicted).
Jimmy Hoffa, meet Frank Fitzsimmons.
No it doesn’t. An impeachment is a political trial, and has no appeal. Outcome is totally up the political whims of the NY legislature.
Valid point.
That conversation was over the phone. No transcript has been released.
Knowing Cuomo, I’d say he meant impeached and convicted.
EXCELLENT!
While the lazy and feckless MSM is completely obsessed with the chaos around Cuomo’s impeachment and the 24x7 breathless coverage it will entail, Biden and the Democrats can quietly get their bills passed in the Senate and House AND get all of Biden’s Cabinet nominees confirmed in the Senate. All under the MSM’s radar.
Thank you Gov. Cuomo , you asshole. Take one for the team.
Cuomo should resign. Actions of elected public officials become larger than themselves. He brands a D after his name. This is bigger than just him. We just witnessed 4 years of an ego dominating the fall of this entire country. Cuomo should set a higher standard for himself AND for the State of New York AND for the Democratic Party, AND for Democrats across this entire country. I don’t really care if he is guilty or not. That’s not the point of this. He should re-establish a high bar for the conduct of elected public officials. This is not all about him. The rest of us have a stake in this, too, whether we live in NY or not.
