Perhaps it wasn’t Barr who did the right thing. We don’t know when Barr learned of the inquiries. He may have been kept in the dark, too. It could have been more junior DOJ officials making this decision.

This is so tragic. It shocks and saddens me that I don’t even know how to respond appropriately. I’m embarrassed to admit that it’s easier for me to not think about it.

I truly believe that no one who knows Trump personally actually likes him, and I wouldn’t be surprised if someone like Barr hates him too. All of the ridiculous and awful things Barr has done to help Trump may have been less about helping Trump and more about protecting the Republican Party.

Maybe this is Barr’s way of setting it up so that, post-Trump, he can say, “Well, I may have looked and acted like a thoroughly corrupt lick-spittle for the most criminal President in history, but trust me, I was actually protecting the nation in more ways than you will ever know!
