Call it California dreaming because I admire everyone here who’s taking this far more seriously than I evidently am, but there aren’t enough hours in the day to dwell on these issues and maintain sanity and hope as I see my shrinking future rise up to meet me.

That is exactly why the GOP has spent decades attacking in order to weaken and put an end to public education. They know they need an ignorant electorate prone to conspiracy theories to stay in power…and it has been working splendidly for them.
The attacks continue today as they sponsor candidates for school boards, spinning conspiracy theories (teachers are grooming our kids) books and curriculum must be tossed, etc. etc.

I would say that TPM is a political news blog with a focus on national American politics. I did find it interesting when they were posing interesting science news stories they ran across several years ago, but it’s really not their bailiwick, so I don’t hold it against them if they aren’t posting about China and the space race or fentanyl deaths. There are more “general interest” organizations out there which would seem to be more geared toward those sorts of stories.
Meanwhile these texts provide significant context to what was happening in the national political scene for an entire political party after they had a disappointing election result, which seems to be right in the sweet spot of what TPM is known for. So they seem perfectly suited to be following this story, in my book, as opposed to those other ones (which are certainly significant in their own right).

They’re not. Yes, they’ve got Tiangong up there now, and they’re gaining competence and looking toward the moon. But they’re not likely to overtake us ‘in a couple of decades’, considering what we’ve already got on the schedule for this decade.
BTW, the human-capable spacecraft that’s traveled farther from the Earth than any other in history (Orion) arrives in San Diego today, having splashed down successfully on Sunday. Artemis I’s mission logs show the ship outperformed expectations, including using noticeably less fuel than they budgeted for the mission, even removing the emergency and reserve fuel supplies. Artemis II is on-track for May 2024, with Gateway going to the Moon 6 months later to establish not only lunar resupply capability, but also a staging point for interplanetary spaceflight, and Artemis III landing in 2025.
If China wants to overtake us, they’re gonna need to land on Mars before the mid-2030s, at this point.

So, OT, but given the dearth of FTS stories here of late, gotta wonder what the GOP connection is here, and you know there is one. Why wasn’t anyone looking into them under Trump, when this was all well underway? And does the incoming GOP house majority intend to investigate this, other than as yet another angle to the Hunter Biden non-story? Watch them try to do this, manufacture an FTS-DNC-Biden-Soros-Antifa connection. You know they’ll try.

I don’t see the point in getting upset over other countries “overtaking” us in space, other than in terms of weaponizing it. Space exploration and colonization beyond low earth orbit is essentially non-competitive at this point, other than in terms of bragging rights. Whatever other countries accomplish out there doesn’t in any way take away from or hold us back, since it’s so vast, even the lunar, planetary and satellite orbits and surfaces. If China lands people on the moon next week then I say good for them (putting aside the cruelty of its regime, but we’re talking science and engineering, not politics), it has nothing to do with our plans to do the same soon. There is no space race except on an ego level.

Sure, but ‘bragging rights’ is a big chunk of what’ll drive the political calculus until profit margins can come into play.
If China lands people on the moon next week, then I start pondering whether or not they’re constructing a mass driver on the surface.
