To me, this is the same as demanding the sexual history and gynecological records of a rape victim.
Totally irrelevant, a supreme invasion of privacy, and Remington is going to win the suit anyway, so what purpose, other than harassment, does this even serve?
In all seriousness, I’ve seen related types of lifetime calculations in cases for stuff like healthcare costs. Very cold stuff, but things like the conditions that a person might have that decrease life expectancy get figured in to the case.
Can see similar possible goals here, lots of absenteeism, indicators of a special needs child or other could actually play a role in the amount of damages in a settlement.
Never forget that these people are so damn racist that one of the men charged with murder was the one who leaked the video. He actually thought it exculpated him. Think about how deeply racist you have to be to think that video in any way vindicates their actions.
I honestly don’t think there’s a damn thing you can throw at these people at this point that would be more painful than what they’ve already endured with the loss of their children and then the relentless harassment they faced afterwards. If the intent is to hurt them, Remington picked the wrong ones.
So basically they’re racking up the billable hours on this in the name of the existing debtors not having to share proceeds from the sales of the various bits with all new debtors (the families)?
Castor, it seems like that is a function of the overall economy growing over time as well as the waning influence/aftereffects of WW2 (i.e.the mindset of keeping a very large standing army in order to fight ‘conventional’ wars which we no longer do).
Defense spending may be at a record low, but we’re still throwing money down useless black holes like the B-21 Raider manned nuclear bomber program. That’s the one where they won’t even tell taxpayers what it will cost, because it would “reveal too much” about the technology being used.
Well of course we spent a hell of a lot of money in the 50s for National Defense spending. Everyone knows it cost more to build than to maintain. NORAD was founded in the late 50s, it costs a lot to tunnel into a mountain. But they only had to tunnel in once. Same concept for the missile silos.
Then there’s building military bases like NSA in Naples.
Damnit Troy it was the cold war!
It is, the general point is that government overall is much smaller relative to the population and economy than any time in the last decades. Yet all we get is the drumbeat about excessive spending.
When inflation this year is running at 6%, so a 3% increase in DoD budget is actually a cut in buying power.
Wouldn’t at all disagree that there is waste in the system, thank your local congresscritters who foist that stuff on the military because it creates jobs in their district and gets them donations
Politicians of all stripes have stood by and squandered our tax money on wars that went absolutely nowhere and huge tax giveaways to the Oligarchs and Corporate monsters instead of keeping up with the deterioration of our infrastructure and its degradation over years because of lack of modernization.
So like any situation where you let your house fall down around you because you would rather buy a new truck/boat, or go on a vacation, the bill has now come due. We either fix it or live in a damn tent in the backyard.
Manchin…his constituents who vote for losers like him…and all of the rightwingers who spend, spend, spend when they are in power, and whine about the deficit when they aren’t, need to be the ones living in those tents somewhere else besides Washington DC.
