OT: Remember how it was earlier this week that Rand Paul said this:
“Earlier this week, Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who is an ophthalmologist, argued that ‘hatred for Trump’ was hindering ivermectin research.
Well, how about this:
Actually, Sen. Paul is who’s hindering ivermectin research: He voted against the March stimulus bill that included funding for the NIH ACTIV-6 trial, which is studying ivermectin.
I ask the same question the Australian media asked the Kraken lawyer: When you listen to yourself, Senator, do you understand how ridiculous you sound?
Why hasn’t this gotten a whole lot more prominence than this report in Mother Jones?

That’s been the argument all along - all the penalties rest with women with no sanctions or even mentions of the men in this discussion.

All this bad news. Here’s a sense of how it’s affecting people I know at my humble community college in Kansas:
My students are having a rough time of it, either becoming sick with COVID or having to quarantine, or stay at home with their quarantined children. And so are my colleagues: yesterday, one of them, the most upbeat, relentlessly (and sincerely) positive person in our department, told me she just about broke down in front of her class as she was urging her students to remember to take care of themselves mentally and emotionally as well as physically. That had almost happened to me as well. Another, older colleague told me he’d love to retire now (he’s struggling with depression), but his wife wants him to keep working to pay off some debt they have. He’s clearly not happy about it. A whole lot of what we’re seeing here is left over trauma and exhaustion from the previous year.
It’s raining here this morning and is supposed to into tomorrow; it’s a measure of how things are going that, even though we need the rain, the gloomy sky isn’t exactly helping people’s moods, either.
COVID was already our new white noise. All this other stuff is only adding to that noise.

The media thrives on bad news and they relish the idea that they can control the monologue they push.
We have each other. We can overwhelm the media message by simply continuing to do what we do without their interference. Personally, I turned off broadcast news five years ago and it has sincerely made all the difference.
Stay strong. Keep the focus. We can do this.

The Pentagon has been awarded a 3% increase to its already obscenely bloated budget for 2022. As per usual, none of the so-called budget hawks asked “How are we going to pay for it?” Then again, maybe it needs the money to offset the cost of all the obscenely expensive equipment it recently gifted the Taliban. OTOH, abandoning the equipment in Afghanistan kept it out of the hands of local police departments. So there’s that.
